They were NOT produced for performance, so you can't really say they are bad heads for performance. They are for torque, heavy vehicles, etc. They are not as "bad" as most make them out to be, but again, they are not for performance. You can make a serious torque motor with these heads. But don't expect to turn much over 4000-4500 rpm.

The late John L. reworked a set of these by adding 2.25"/1.90" valves and porting them out from right at 200 cc's to about 230 cc's and they made one heck of a 502 P/U motor head!

(Performer intake, 9.2 CR., a CC 210/218, 110/106 595" hy-roller cam). Something like 606 t at 36 or was it 3800 rpm??

The build-up was written up in an old mag. that had the stock teal colored, '57 H-T custom named "Che-Zoom" on the front of it!!

BUT again, low rpm b/c at 5000 they were pretty much all done.

Now on a 396/402/408 motor they will go some higher like this.

Does anyone know what mag/issue/etc... this article was in? I have a 2500 Suburban I am kinda kicking around as a devilish alter ego to the new Supercharged Range Rover. At 5000+ pounds, I have no interest in going to the strip, and maybe my own (read: $0 cost) peanut ports can be used in the rebuild? Any advice on how to make a truly monstrous street SUV is appreciated. My target (From Rover site) is 400hp/420ftlbs. I think right now the Bourbon is rated at something like 230hp/385ftlbs. Peace - John

I've heard the same thing....peanut ports are not a high flowing head but they are good for torque....I've considered using a set on a 454 and then dropping it in a late 70's 3/4 lifted Chevy and see how well it can go thru mud and whatnot.....

jwhdfw,

it's your lucky day!

You better buy a LOTTO TICKET!!

The article is in the January, 1993 issue of "Hot Rod" mag. on page 80!

It's titled, "Maximum Rat" and has John L. smiling at you in a pic.

May John rest in peace.

I hope you can scare up a copy of it.

PS., and I only had to look through about three boxes for it to boot...........

The 496 article is reprinted in "How to Build Monster Big Block Chevys" or some similar title. Good article.

I had peanut ports on my boat. 5K was the limit for that engine.

GOT IT! Lingenfelter article is called "Maximum Rat" in the January 93 Hot Rod. I got lucky because before 1992 my library pitches the older stuff. I haven't read it yet - just printed it off the fiche. This is definitely going to be my take-off point for my project. One more question though - when any of you partake of something like this, is passing your local/state inspections ever a concern or do you just kinda..ahem...improvise???
