Nope. Tailpipes have to exit from under the vehicle either in front of the rear tires, out the back or behind the rear tires to the side. They probably won't even put the sniffer in it. I know they won't here in NJ, so I would think they wouldn't even look at the thing in CA.

Exact same truck here. Mine has exhaust end similar to yours, but has a muffler welded on. Anything AFTER the cat (save for the post O2 sensor if equipped) are NOT mandated by the EPA and they can not fail you for it.

Good luck! Mine passes every year but failed last year for the EVAP test. The line that goes to the charcoal canister was full of tiny holes.

I lived in San Mateo, CA up until about 2000 and my brother had a '74 stepside pickup with pipes that exited infront of the rear tires and it passed (until it was exempted). I don't think it is an issue. I agree with SCOTTS66 statement that the emissions test is seperate from any safety inspection although there was not a safety inspection in CA last time I checked.

CA doesn't have any annual or biannual safety inspections. There are two parts to the SMOG Check here in CA: 1) visual inspection/functional check, and 2) sniffer up the tailpipe.

I have no idea if the lack of a muffler is a fail item. Probably more of an issue with sound ordinance than SMOG. If you have a CAT, what's the point of ditching the muffler anyway? That's so high school era :p

for a sniff test here in MD, the probe must be inserted at least 10 inches into the tailpipe. No more dyno testing here as of July 1. now a static tailpipe test or ODB II.

ok so i dont have to worry about it it seems, only one thing, im having trouble hunting down a gremlin. the vacuum line that goes from the egr valve to the map sensor... when its hooked up the truck stumbles really bad and dies. when i unplug it the truck runs awesome! what it the problem? i think i"ll fail the visual inspection if they pop the hood and see unhooked vacuum lines.
