Ok guys I have a few questions involving the installation of the 12-Circuit Universal Painless Harness in my 70...

1st
When hooking up my turn signal switch wires to the harness on the column all the wires matched up except there are two extra wires coming out of the harness on the column a green/white stripe wire and a tan/white stripe wire, what are these?

Down at the bottom of my steering column right before it goes through the firewall there is a white plastic piece mounted to the column with a connector on it and a green and orange wire both were already cut when I took my dash apart, I think they may have been a safety so you couldnt start the car without it in park (used to be column shift) am I right?

On the ignition plug on the column closest to the driver there is three wires going to the plug a red, orange and green, my Painless kit came with this plug but just had the orange and red wires in it, I believe this too may have something to do with the thing at the bottom of the column in my previous question

I have the SS dash with the full guage package and the harness that plugs into the back of the gauges and connects to the printed circuit board has 14 wires going to it my Painless kit only has the following wires for the dash:
Oil press
Volt meter
Fuel level
Tach wire
Temp wire
Right turn indicator wire
Left turn " "
High Beam ""
A/C & Heat switch wire
Wiper wire
and Instrument lighting wire
How do I wire up my dash? Is the plug availabe from Ground Up I havent browsed the catalog yet...

Trying to wire up the dome light and door jamb switches Painless has Domelight power wire and Domelight ground wire, DJS on the driver side has a white and black wire on it, DJS on pass side has just a white wire, here is how I was going to wire it up, wire the white wires (which my Haynes manual says are ground but then again also shows two wires coming out of each switch go figure) together and run them up to the "Dome light Return Terminal"(worded from the Painless manual) on my headlight switch, then run the dome light power wire (comes direct from fuse block) to my dome light then the dome light ground wire from the dome light to the black wire on the DJS on the drivers side, does this sound right?

Other than these little setbacks installation has been pretty painless...

1- I'm thinking the wires are the key minder wires. The two connect to contacts that close when the key is in the column lock.

2- Depends on what trans the car had when new. If it had a manual trans the column mounted switch will be for the backup lights only. The factory wire colors are pink and green. The start safety switch for a manual trans is connected to the clutch and has purple and purple/white wires. The auto trans will have the same wire colors that connect to one column mounted switch, backup and neutral safety in one switch.

3- The green wire in the factory connector is for the temp warning light or temp gauge. When the ignition switch is in the start position the green wire grounds to test the light/gauge. The gauge will work fine without it.

4- The cluster should have 12 wires. This pic will explain the connections. As far as I know the Cluster connector is not available, you will need to clip the one of the harness or visit a salvage yard to get one. The same connector was used on many GM cars in the late 60s and 70s.

The A/C heat power supply will connect to the brown wire of the A/C harness.
I'm not sure how the painless harness deals with the wipers. Are you going to use the factory wiper switch? If I remember correctly SNFU Mobile did figure out how the make the wipres work.

Last- The black wire on the drivers side door jamb switch is for the key minder circuit. The correct way to wire it will be the connect the dome light ground wire to both DJSs and the head light switch, white wires, so that any one of the three switches will complete the dome light ground. The switches will be wired in parallel.

You will only need one of the two wires on the cluster connector for each. On the factory harness one wire is from the signal switch the other goes to the bulkhead and on to the front signal light.

You will need to run a ground wire for the cluster. Install a wire from the metal back, like at the bottom screw holding the tach, to the parking brake. You likely removed black wires with ring terminals from each location when removing the old harness.
My guess is that the harness is designed for a two headlight system.

The factory harness has a tan wire that connects to one of three terminals in each outside head light, this is the low beam. There is a light green wire that connects to one of three terminals on the outside head lights, and one of two terminals on the inside head lights, this is the high beam. Each light has a black wire that is the ground. I would connect the low beam wire to the same terminal that gets the tan wire in the two outside lights and connect the high beam wire to both lights on each side. All 4 head lights are on when high beam is selected.
