Re: Out side storaage of car for the winter

Mo Gary,it is not the LS6. It is the 70 L78 Nova It needs some body work and a paint job. I think I would be divorced before any of the other cars were forced outside.

I would park it on top of plastic as moisture will come up through the ground. Outside storage is not exactly a dry environment, but every little bit helps.

dryer sheets help keep away rodents..and they smell better than mothballs :D
I used the dryer sheets too but I have found that few bars of 'Irish Spring' soap cut into chunks & placed into plastic cups around the inside of the car works as well.

Plus it give it that clean hibernian smell.

If you fill the tank full and run it a few times over the winter I would not use stabil. I'm not sold on that stuff. Heard a lot of negative things about it!
Just make sure to keep the tires aired up and as said protect against rodents.
It's not like you are storing it for a year or more. :)

Re: Out side storaage of car for the winter

I had to do that a couple years ago. I hated doing it, and the bad thing about car covers is that you get tiny fine scratches in the paint from the wind blowing the cover around against the car, even if you tie it down. And heaven forbid you get a hail storm! I found acorns stored in the header collectors from the mice (open headers) but they came flying out of there as soon as a fired up the engine. After that, I kept rags stuffed inside of the collectors that I had soaked real good with Liquid "Stench" (Liquid Wrench I mean). That kept the mice out of the collectors. Then there's the snow and ice formation on top of the cover. Not exactly great for the paint either.

I didn't use that stabil stuff either. But like it's been stated, you then should fire up the engine once every couple weeks, and let it run for a good 15-20 minutes.

I'd be interested in what problems have been discovered with fuel stabilizer. I've been using it for years, in my snow blower, chain saw's, lawn mowers/tractors, as well as the cars. I've never had any problems with gas gumming up. It's such a small amount that is added, What's the problem with it?

Same here for me, I had gas in my pickup that was three years old with stabil and it ran like a new one.I've been using stabil for a long time, I guess since I first heard about it.

So.

Weed Eater
Chainsaw
Two john Deere Garden tractors
A 20'' mower
A 9 horse pressure washer
Two snow blowers
Two rototillers
Electric snow blower:p
Edger
car
truck

I have never ever had to touch a carburetor or even change a spark plug in any of my stuff since I started using it.

Nothing has quit or wouldn't start.

I run stabil year round in the tractors and other implements, saves me draining the gas out of them.

But, if you keep stabil I'm guessing here, a year or so it will turn dark colored, especially if you put a bottle of new stuff up beside it.

That might be where the problem comes in, I won't use it if it starts turning darker.

The problem with Stabil is when the gas in the carb gets evaporated, the Stabil doesn't evaporate like gas and it leaves behind 'crystals' that do not dissolve when re-introduced to gasoline.
These 'crystals' will eventually plug up the small passages in the carb.

As posted ealier, I usually DO NOT use it for a short term storage (over the winter) but if an engine will not be started for 12+ months I may use it.

Normally I store my car with a full tank.....3/4 Premium pump gas & 1/4 Cam2

I think I would look for a self storage building outside of your town if they are too expensive, in town. If at all possible I WOULD NOT store a car of any value outside.

I have found that if I go 60-90 miles outside of KC storage rates go way down! I have on occasion stored a car OUTSIDE of KC in one of these.

You're better off using Seafoam for fuel storage than Sta-Bil. The problem with Sta-Bil is that it creates a "film" on top of the gas to keep air out, and if that film is compromised, it really isn't doing anything at that point to keep the gas fresh. Seafoam mixes with the gas and stays mixed, so it doesn't have that problem.

I've stored gas in cars for a few years and had no problems at all, but if I chose to use a gas additive it would be Seafoam.
