I know many Mfg. of tires were used. ( Who is the LOW bidder this week? ) I did not order any special tire or tire size when I ordered my 70 LS-5 / M-22 El Camino in Feb. of 70.
My SS 454 1970 El Camino was delivered ( April of 70 )with " B.F. Goodrich Silvertowns " G-70-14" with a WHITE STRIPE.
Today on my Camino, I have the Goodyears. I think today we have two choices for Org. style tires, In the 70s the big three were looking for the low bidder.
I have a picture from the winter of 1970/71 at a ski resort with my Camino parked in the snow and you can see the white stripe tires.

Bob is right. Whatever GM got the best deal on at the time your car was being built, is what was put on it. Today we only have two choices, the Firestone Wide Ovals, and the Goodyear Polyglas. I prefer to use the Firestones on my cars, because they are usually cheaper priced, and I HATE Goodyear tires.

In 1969 Chevrolet used primarily Goodyears, in 1970 General Dia Belts and Uniroyals tiger Paws were the most common followed by Firstone then Goodyear.
Bob you might want to check your order form White letters were standard on the Super Sport package even in an elCamino. The White wall was a No Cost choice that had to be specified !! Here's the build sheet on my 70 SS convertible showing F70 14 WW for White wall, an very unusal choice and seldom seen on a Super Sport. My car came with Goodyear Polyglass white walls as not all brands had the WW available in that size.

My LS6 had General's Atlanta built April 70, My survivor 70 300 still has Uniroyals on it. Uniroyals are Very rare and seldom seen. Chris White got my 10 I had stashed away a couple of years ago !!! My 72 Convertible still rides on Uniroyal Tiger Paws and they really smoke well !!

This is just a thought. The Caminos had the larger size G-70-14. Would it have been possible, At the time " We aint got no G-70 raised white letters , So you get station wagon tires " ?
More 1970 SS El Camino trivia.
On the 70 Dealer El Camino literature (printed in August 69). The White SS 396 with the Black V-Top has white stripe tires AND the lower 1" wide trim that starts just above the front side marker lights and goes all the way back to the rear bumper.
On most non SS Caminos the area below the trim was painted Silver. You GOTTA look real close at the factory literature, It shows a Camino with a wood grain dash and steering wheel. One other item that is SOOOoooooo wrong on the factory Lit. Most people will NEVER find it, I looked at it for three days and DID NOT find it.
The guy from Calif. that sent me the Literature, Told me a week later about the big screw-up on the Lit.
If anyone has the org. 70 El Camino dealer literature,, Have you found the BIG SCREW UP??????
If you do E-Mail me, So we can laugh together.
Did I know in April of 70 when I picked up my ordered SS 454 M-22 El Camino from the dealer, The white stripe tires may wrong, NO. I will never forget the B.F.Goodrich Silvertowns, WHY?
I was playing in a band at Seven Springs Ski Resort in Pa. In 1970 Sears & Roebuck sold Amps & Guitars under the name " Silvertone "
TWO of the guys in the band were Jacking me about having Sears & Roebuck tires on my new Chevy truck. In closing, Its been a fun ride driving the same El Camino for 40 years and 10 months.
In 71-72 I had Corvette knock off wheels on the Camino, Do you know what happens at 40 MPH when you hit the brakes and find out you have a left side Corvette addaptor bolted to the right side?

The white stripe tires are Not wrong they were a NO cost option that you had to specify at the time of order. The SS396 or SS454 package gave you Rasied white letter tires as part of the package on a 14x7 rim. The Standard size for a Chevelle was F70 14 for the El Camino it was a G 70 14, the wagon used a F78 14. There have been documented El Camino's that had F 70's on them so just look at your build sheet it tells all !!!!!

The bottom line on my El Camino. When I left Sahli Chevrolet in April, 1970, My SS 454- M/22 had B.F. Goodrich " Silvertowns " with a white stripe. Never looked at the tire size.
