I am just about finished restoring my 1970 documented L78 4 speed. I purchased the Gardner exhaust system and I am debating whether to put the original exhaust tips on or the new ones. The original tips are in good condition with a slight amount of surface rust on the bottom at the edge of the tip, very small amount.

I am restoring this car mostly for show purposes, such as Chevellabration and the regional Chevelle shows. Although I will be driving it occasionally.

What do judges look for on a show car, perfectly clean parts that may be reproductions or original parts that are in good condition?

When the cars came off the assembly line, they did not have the P/N on the bottom side like the NOS ones do.

Darn...beat me to it!!

One other point worth noting. The most recently-available GM tips have the numbers imprinted somewhat differently than the ones available in the past. Previously, the numbers appeared as if they were stamped in, whereas the newest GM tips have numbers that appear to be lightly etched in (i.e., the digits are comprised of tiny dots).

Thanks for the responses but I think I didn't ask my question clearly.
What are judges looking for when doing a points type show? Are they looking for something perfect, as in a new repro set of tips, or are they looking for the originality, as in the original tips?

I have both sets of tips. I am trying to decide which set to put on, for points in a car show.

Thanks,
Tim

I think either would be correct as long as they are not the cheap repops, but if your going to go AACA or a high point judge class, (which you will not find in Nashville) I would redo my originals

I think he is asking if the shape and the outlets are the exact duplicates of what you got on the car in 1970. Most people don't really care if they are 80% exact and look decent. I find it hard to believe they are the exact same as they were. I would redo the originals if I were you and pay the extra cash.

How close are the 69's with the rolled tips to the originals I wonder? I know Ground Up has them and they look good in the pictures.
