I have a 72 chevelle and my bumpers are both good but theres one slight problem, on my rear bumper there is a pretty good dent in it right above the liscense plate. Looks like a trailer hitch hit it. I was wondering if reproduction bumpers are anywhere near the quality of the originals or if I should just go to a body shop and have them pound it out.

Reproduction bumpers are just that, nothing is like original you can send yours out to rechrome about $600.oo to a quality chromer. The body shop will bang out the dent not to well and the chrome will crack,it needs to be heated, straightened and rechromed. I use Pauls Chrome Plating and there work is top notch 10-12 week turnaround time.

We put new repro bumpers on our '69 el Camino. They seem to be fine for a regular type vehicle and bolted up without problems. If you are going into a restoration of a nice SS car, It would probably be better to rechrome a good core. Plating has become very expensive so you do have to weigh the cost in your decision.

If you go on Ebay right now copy and paste the item number in the search bar : 260105910964 this bumper is brand new for only $139.00 plus $30.45 in shipping very good deal for a brand new triple plated bumper good luck.

I think I might just get get that dent fixed and rechrome it. Sounds like the repro bumbers aren't that great.
This past Friday I just received a set of Goodmark brand aftermarket bumpers for my '65. Am very happy with both of them. I agonized for two months about whether to get mine re-chromed, but the cost scared me away - $900 at tri-City in TN. And the turnaround time. And the cost of shipping both ways.
So I trolled around, called around, and finally found someone who sold Goodmark cheaper than anyone else. (Matt's Classic Bowties) The cost for BOTH new bumpers was $342 INCLUDING shipping. (5% discount on the second purchase) And they arrived way up here in one week. Compared to $450 to get one bumper re-chromed I think I made the right choice. That extra $550 is going to get spent on other stuff I need.
And some folks here think that the steel is lighter on the Goodmark ones. It isn't. I weighed each one after it arrived. Weighs the same.

So ChevelleKid, make your own choice, but I'm happy with mine. They look great.

If you don't have the big bucks, just get one of the good repro's mentioned here and put your original up on the shelf (just in case you change your mind in the future).

That way you can still sleep at night and the savings now will allow to get some other things done as well!

From what I hear, the repop bumpers are for show only. You can not use the bumper jack on them and I am unsure of how well they would hold up in an accident.
I have never used a bumper jack on any of my cars!
And the repro 70 SS rear bumper I bought weighs as much as the original that I took off so I certainly wouldn't worry about how it would hold up in an accident

As for jacking on a stock Chevelle rear bumper, I had my first 70 Chevelle in '77 and had a flat. When I jacked it up the gap at the top of the bumper closed up enough to chip the paint above the corner of the bumper. I threw an old scew jack from a pickup in the trunk and used it instead.

I think i'm gonna go with a Goodmark bumper. I always hear good things about them and I think repairing and rechroming the bumper would be too costly, since I really dont have the budget to fit about 900 dollars to fix a bumper.

Thanks guys

Wow, did the price of getting bumpers chromed go up a whole lot in the past year? I bought original 71 re-chromed bumpers from TriCity last winter and they were $300 each or $250 with a core exchange. They would of re-chromed my bumpers for $250 each also.
