IMO you could get a better engine from a local reputable builder. Both have risks and IMO the warranty on the GM motor isn't any better than a local warranty except maybe if you bought it from a local dealer and had them install it.
BTW if you had your location in your profile, folks could give you a local recommendation or the places to avoid (via PM of course) :)

I just went through agonizing over this myself. I bent a valve and blew a ring in my 454. I couldn't re-build it myself. I was disgusted and was thinking the 454 HO. I didn't know any reputable builders and thought brand new GM was the way to go.

Luckily, money slowed me down from making a hasty descision. Your looking at 6K+ by the time you buy the oil pan, distributor gear and shipping.

I talked to alot of people and a buddy of mine knows an excellant builder an hour away IN Ohio.

4K for total rebuild, including purchasing a set of vintage square port heads, carb tuning and a day on the dyno pushing 500HP. I probably could have gotten 600HP out of it if I didn't go with the stock Heads intake and carb.

That descision saved me 2K and gave me 75 more HP. than the HO.

If theres a good builder in your area, I bet the guys on this site know it. Even if you have to buy the bare core and ship it your still way ahead of the game.

I bet you could get 572 performance for the price of the 454HO.

Im here on Long island and the guy I would use if and will when the time comes is Mat, at Lizzard Racing. here some info... 387 wyandanch ave. North Babylon ny 631 420 1476.. He just redid my 281s and I am very happy.. He stands behind anything he builds. He will work to your budget and explain different ways to go for the amount of dollars on hand.. Tell him Phil with the 70 green chevelle sent you. He is honest and extremely capable.. |Im sure there are many others here as well, but Lizzard is my choice.. good luck Phil

If you decide to get the GM 454HO I suggest you go shopping at all of your local GM dealers. When I bought my 454HO several years ago I went to every GM dealer within driving range and talked to the Parts Manager. Got different pricing from every shop. When you buy from GM you also save on shipping charges.

Good shopping...

However, when you purchase locally, you'll pay sales tax which is twice what shipping would cost you.

PS. Nice Autumn Gold Chevelle and a great story.

Don't forget:

GM Perf crate engines now carry 24 month and 50,000 parts and labor warranty starting 3/1/07. Standard replacement stuff is still 12/12. Make sure you verify with your seller BEFORE you buy too.

Fellow Members,

Opinion needed on the purchase of a GM Performance Products 454 HO Crate Engine, from either Summit or Jegs. Please Help! I dont want to make a BAD decission!!!

Thank You!
bought mine local g.m,.dealer
4200 out the door..
the dissy gear is 60 bucks...
and the oil pan is 125.00

you can not build an other 454 for this money..
from intake to oil pan
flex plate to water pump..
valvecovers and a roller cam...
with forged crank/rod/pistons//
you can't do it...
all new parts...
and a standard bore block...

most machine shops selling 454 for 3500-4500.00 bucks
are 60 over blocks and 30 under cranks..

sorry .. I saved money going crate...

a local shop can build you one.. for 35-3900 but the ask him to add roller cam/rockers/alum valvecovers/intake/waterpump/tin/ amd a warranty...
see where that price lands.

That is super cheap. I priced local dealers, Summit, Jegs etc. and the best I found was $5400 from summit, + shipping pan/gear was pushing $5700.

You should see if that price is still good and hook the guy up. If they'll ship out of state and void the sales Tax I'd be thinking hard about that one.

Sounds like they gave it to you for cost or less???

PS> I just checked with Summit, $5149 + 180 shipping $5329.

I got my solid roller 462 with a new LS6 crank, rods, and new TRW forged pistons put together for just under $4300. That included the machine shop work and balancing and assembly of the long block. Made it way past the listed GM warranty period with no issues. The price includes everything but the $625 holley HP carb. All the prts were name brand: TRW, Comp cams, GM LS6, Crower, Moroso Weiand etc.

Actually that was a LONG BLOCK with the heads including the roller rockers and the new coated stealth intake and NIB MSD distributor. I was into the 454 for $350 bucks and typically can still find them around here for around that price. Last spare I got was $300.

All I had to do when it came from the machine shop was install the intake, waterpump, igintion stuff. (price of those items included above except the carb).
