Is it possible to have the "generator" light in the instrument panel work when using the one wire type alternator? I've read a few posts about how to make the light work when you run the "CS type" but haven't been able to find anything about how to make it work with the "one-wire" type.

The 1-wire alternators are supposed to have the connecter where you can still connect a wire for a light. At least one manufacturer just puts a rubber plug over it.

I just don't know why you wouldn't install a normal factory style GM alternator. If you want the light hooked up then you're 2/3 of the way there anyways. You only have to jumper the 3rd wire to the main power post anyways so you're really about 4/5 of the way there if you do connect the light to a 1-wire.

I guess I just don't understand why people pay extra to but the one-wire alternators mail order. You pay extra after the shipping and such and you end up with something that you have to ship back if it fails under warranty. You also can't find them in most normal parts stores so good luck fixing it the next day if it does fail.

If you're looking for an internally regulated alternator to put on your car and you haven't added any significant extra loads then just put a SI-10 on it. It's really got to be the simplist and cheapest swap out there.

Gee thanks for the answer to my post Peter. I think I'm about 0/5ths of the way to a solution now with your advice. I think I'll just go out and gut that beautiful chrome alternator I have and turn it into an SI type so that you can have it the way you want.

Did you specifically say you already had an alternator. It appeared to me that you were wondering if it was possible so you could decide which way to go for your alternator purchase. I don't think so. If you weren't so busy being an ******* you'd see my answer was in the post.

In case you can't figure that part out, the covered connector will have the place where the wire goes exactly like the similar model that isn't a 1-wire. Are you happy now? If it doesn't have the connector then you're just plain **** out of luck.
