my 70's alt. system has been butchered. i do know the the system is not charging. when you remove the positive cable from the battery with the engine running, it dies. with a one wire setup, you install the alt. and run a wire from the lug to the positive terminal on the battery. is this correct? if so where do i find one of these alt., of course i would install a fusible link. also i want to install an amp gauge, would i run a wire from the gauge to the lug on the alt.?

Yes it sounds like your regulator died.
Don't go yanking that cable off while the engine is running. It's dangerous, isn't a good test, and started years ago by people who didn't know how to test.
May want to read this before you decide on a one-wire.

thanks, for the reply. i installed a 1 wire today, i went to a local reman shop. he built one this morning to make 105 amp. i installed it with a 10 ga wire to battery with a fusible link. this will sufice for now. system worked great. drove it about a mile and already charged the battery enough to restart. engine seems to run better, it has a hei ignition.
