Is this just for break-in and relatively new builds or should a guy use it in an older engine as well? Mine is a '73 454 with 85000mi. Any need for this oil?
It certainly won't hurt. Since the drop in ZDDP in most oils, even for a stock cam, it is a good safeguard to run oil that is made specifically for older engines with flat tappet cams. However, I have 3 vehicles that are stock with flat tappet cams and I run just regular oil with no additive. They all are high mileage engines ( 150k - 210k) and I don't have problems. I think the problem arises mainly with higher than stock lift and spring pressures.

That being said, if it's on sale, buy it.

YES!
Use it (or = oil with proper zddp lvl) for even your stock low perf 454 with a ft cam.

===================

If it's online summit store telling you it cant ship to CT i live approx 30 mins from
CT and can get all of that oil i want shipped to me,just got 2 cases last wk.

I'd call summit dirtectly if thats the case to ask whats up with that.

If that doesnt pan out then try autozone for valvoline V1 race oil with proper zddp lvl for ft cvams thats currently on sale for $2 off perf qt so approx $2.50 qt/conventional,it's a great buy.

Most aotozones only carry the 20-50 valvoline vr1 race oil but its also mfg'd in 10-30 which you can special order from autozone if you dont want to run 20-50.

The vr1 oil is avail in conventional & full syn but your motor wouild be fine with the chepaer conventional VR1 oil.

Now it says not available!!
I guess all you guys bought it all!
=======================================

Not totally correct.

Heres links to the semi blend FT cam oil on sale at same price in 10-40 /20-50 but in single qts,comes out same price buying 12 qts seperate vs case price even on sale.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-MG10W40SB/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-MG20W50SB/

Also,the convetional ft cam oil by the case in both grades is due in on 4/12 per summit & sale ends end of April so you would still have time to buy it.

The same oil is also avail on Spectro's oil site under Motorgard series oil with 1,800ppm zddp for Ft cams.,summit get's thier oil from spectro.

I just ordered 12 seperate bottles of 10w40 semi-synthetic @ $4.95.They would NOT ship a pre-cased unit of 12,(same case price though).The internet shows the 10w40 petroleum based available 4-12-11 but the salesman said that his screen shows that it could possibly be special ordered OR they were not getting any more.His thought was the manufacturer (Spectro) must have changed the price or deal they had to private label it.Who knows????

Thats funny i just called and was able to order some synthetic today. I don't know why the guy yesterday said i couldn't get it. Guess i'll take my 20w50 vr1 racing oil back to autozone. I rather run thinner oil.
==============================

Just an fyi,VR1 also comes in 10-30 but autozone by me doesnt normally stock it but you can order vr1 10-30 thru autozone or summit/jegs too.

I called two of the autozones around the area and they said they can't get the 10w30 vr1. No matter i got the synthetic stuff from summit with more zinc.

You just can't believe these guys (salesmen) all the time. I called about a Harmonic Damper (Jegs brand) one time asking where it was made and the guy told me a local Machine shop!!! Called a second time and they said overseas. Yes this was Jegs, but still !!
