Hello all, 22 year old here with a 69 Chevelle ss Tuexedo Black, turbo 400 trans and bucket seats. Have had the car for over a year, and shes bone stock. Been wanting to build her the way they did back in the 70s racing the backstreets from stop light to stop light. I really love the big fat tires in the back and even some good meat on the front. I would love to know how you all built them back in the day and if that defers to what sizes for wheels and tires you all have now. I would like to go with a 15 in wheel because I feel like that keeps the old school look. Not wanting to mini tub or anything, just bild it like I could have in the 70s.

Also, feel free to share any stories you all have of getting in trouble or making a few pennies from racing or such, would love to hear them.

That's a sweet looking car. If you want to stay with stock looking wheels they make a 15 inch version in 7,8, maybe 10 inch width ( for wider on the rear) great car! Enjoy it, their a lot more fun than new computer controlled "cars".

It might not be a bad idea to divide this site into traditional and custom like the hokey board. Stock wheels look tiny. The term old school only causes trouble. If I'd have had your car when I was 22 and money for wheels and tires, I think Cragar SSTs with L60s and G60s would have been my pick.

A pretty standard setup is 15" x 8" x 4.5" backspace wheels for the rear. Add 275/60/15 tires and you'll fill up the wheel wells pretty good without the fear of rubbing every time you turn a corner. Of course you should take some measurements of YOUR car first, because every car is different.
Here is a pic of the above setup, maybe not technically old school, but it works for me.

I'm pretty sure N-50-15" tires are still sold (I had those on a 73 340 4 spd Duster in 78), fill the rear wheel well up but watch your wheel back spacing, the TTII's have M&H Racemaster DR's in 275/50r17" and Welds are MT ET Street DR's in 295/55r15" both on 10" wheels with 5.5" BS just for an idea of fitment

Thank you, I actually was thinkning the same thing with keepin ghtw stock look and just going for a bigger wheel in the same model. Do you think 15x8 in the rear and 15x7 in the front?

Yes those Magnum 500's are nice stock wheels! The look you described is what you already have..as well a really nice looking car!
Sounds like I should just keep the magnum 500s and go for a bigger wheel maybe 15 to get that wider stance and taller look. Thank you!!!

My dream would be some cragar ss or those american racing vintaged machined grey, however not sure if that grey machined color would not look good on the black. Anyone ever done that combo?

Love the simplicity with this build, pretty lines on this too, straight as an arrow. What do you have in the rears?

This is what I like, would love to put some 275s in the rear to get that wide look, Ive seen some do the 295s as well and I veen think that looks incredible. Thanks for sharing, Ill do some research on if they still have those available.

275 is what I want, great example right here. Also love the wheel choice witht his build, dont see that too often. Ill make some measurments with that backspacing in mind. Thank you!!!

You also can't go wrong with Cragar SS 15x10 in the back 15x6 in front, or American Racing Torque Thrusts in same sizes. Make sure you check back spacing with the 15x10s. You can always go 15x8 in the back too.

Those cragar SS look great on the black. Love the ehight oft hese cars, great stance. As far as Im concnerned, Id like to go just about as wide and big as I can in the back, mayve 275s would be my limit. Also like how these fill the wheel wells nicely.
