I'm curious as to what magazines (from the 60s and 70s) have the best Muscle cars Ads. I'm trying to find some of the old ads, to scan and frame for my son's room. I've got a handful of old Hot Rods with some cool ads, But they're mostly black and white. I just don't know what Magazine's where color or larger...

One of the Hot Rods did have a Nickey Camaro ad and a Three page fold out GM ad.

Also you can go on Ebay and find lots of them for not much money. Be sure to look at them all - most are darn near the same, just diff price. Have fun shopping! I have to stay away from Ebay anymore.

From time to time there is some pretty cool Mopar ads for sale on ebay. I've never bought any ( somehow I think I would be cheating on the Chevelle). Back in the sixties they did alot of animated advertising with their muscle cars, such as cudas with super oversized rear tires etc. Would make great posters and usually reasonably priced too.

Hot Rod, Super Stock and Drag Illustrated, and Car Craft, are three old magazines that will have lots of nice ads.

Any of the car mags from back in the day (Hot Rod, Car & Driver, Car Craft, Road & Track, Car Life, Popular Hot Rodding, Motor Trend) will have at least a couple full-page ads for muscle cars. Look for issues besides May thru August - those tended to have the least number of ads because it was late in the model year. Also, non-car magazines such as Life, Look, and Saturday Evening Post have nice large ads, although besides occasional ads for Chevelles or Camaros you'll also find lots of ads for cars like Plymouth Furys and Ford LTDs.

That is where a lot of the big ads come from. Check your local library Hopefully you have one that thinks old mags are worth archiving. Good Luck

Hint - The one and only bookstore in the Milwaukee airport has a very extensive collection of Life magazines individually wrapped, sorted by month/year, and dating back to the late 50's. I've purchased a number of them (that contain full page ads for SS's) over the years in my travels.

Picked one up earlier this year that had a nice ad for the new 70 SS's that started appearing in the fall '69 issues. Was interesting to see the battle of the extremes beginning to take place between some musclecar ads and ads in the same issue touting the advent of the compact car, Toyota in this case.

Beyond the cars, these old magazines are a trip back in time for sure......fun stuff.

To me it is preferable to scan them and edit the creases out. I scanned a dilapidated 2-page spread of the '71 Duster 340 & Twister, spent 2 weeks cleaning it up, and even added the missing Duster lettering to the leading edge of the stripes and a duster trail to the end of the stripe on the Twister model. I've turned 4-door Biscaynes into 2-door 427 Biscaynes and Chevelle SS396s into Canadian Malibu SS models. Lots of other stuff as well. What inspires me is "what if?" Get some good photo-quality paper and you can print them and frame them.

I don't know, it just irks me to rip old magazines apart because you lose the rest of it. Since you can scan and edit them, to me that is the way to go.

This car started out as a 4-door post Bel Air, but I turned it into an exact likeness of a car I once saw in Hamilton, Ontario in the early 70s.

There is a new company in Calgary, Alberta that has the rights to reproduce Mopar and GM classic ads - they are incredible.

They are all remastered - most look really, really great!

My advice is get them in a larger size (you can order most 8"x11" but I think (and others that have seen them think) the medium and larger sizes look best). They also offers most up to poster size and the ads can be a great addition to your den, garage or office.

Mike worked a miracle in recreating most of these ads - the original master artwork on most or all was not kept by GM/Mopar. He is working with Ford on the license rights at this time. He is a dedicated car guy - wanting to preserve the history of muscle cars.

I have all the original 67 Chevelle magazine ads that I have bought from vendors over the years - the product out of Classic Auto Images blows the old magazine copies out of the water.

Thanks for the Help All. I think I will contact my local library, to see if they have old magazines. But I will probably end up buy a few Poster size ad from the web site Tony posted for my basement and garage. Those are great. I'm a sucker for old Mopars, and their ads were fun too.

I definitely agree with not ripping the magazines up. Being born in 72, I missed the muscle era, but it's a blast reading these old Hot Rods.

PS. Did Yenko or Balwin Motion ever advertise, or were they just known. I've found a Nickey ad (as previuosly mentioned) and a Royal Bobcat ad.

Yes,Yenko and Baldwin Motion did advertise in the magazine's of the day.
I have a few vintage issues of "Hi Performancer Cars" advertising the Motion Phase III cars

When I first bought my house, I had 7 framed original '67 ads in my bathroom. It looked really good. When I redid the bathroom, the chevelles didn't fit anymore, so I put up 7 original '36 Ford ads. I have old Coke ads up in the kitchen. I have a 18x24 original framed '38 Ford truck poster too. I just love old ads. Probably because I'm a graphic designer.

National Geographic from 60's and early 70's are orientated towards family type cars (Buicks, Caddys, etc,) but did have Chevelle SS, and GTO ads. Look and Life had larger adds for main stream and muscle cars. Car and Driver and Popular Mechanics had same as Look and Life, only smaller format. As said Hot Rod, Car Craft, etc. had the muscle car ads too.
