I've been a smoker ~ 1.5 packs a day for 23 years now... I have tried to quit in the past many times but have failed due to close relatives smoking around me daily. Yeah I know, poor excuse but it's hard when your wife lights up 2 feet from you and you smell it and want it! Recently I've been trying to quit smoking and I haven't smoked really for ~1.5 weeks (tired of coughing my ass off every morning and killing myself, been using the nicotine patch). I have cheated a few times in the evening the first few days when I started quitting but it's getting better, i think. :D I have one last Stogie/Doobie I've been saving and I'm going to go burn it here in a minute and wish my bad habit a fond goodbye. (too late it's burnt and gone :D)

Anyone have any good advice for not restarting the old bad habit? :beers:

I used to smoke and chew, one or the other, then about three years ago I quit smoking and just chewed.

Then I quit chewing, quite a while ago, I don't even think about it.

But heres what did it for me.

The bride and I are on social security and we pay into a supplemental insurance thats a little under $400.00 a month.

This covers any doctor and any hospital we want and it pays everything, we pay zero and we have used it, no paperwork, our insurance company handles it.

This insurance is pure gold to us, and we intend to try and not abuse it and keep it.

Now pay close attention here.

My insurance man was helping us fill out the papers and the question came up, do you use tobacco products and I said no.

Now, you need to go and talk to your insurance man if you have one, and ask him about tobacco products and does it have any effect on what you pay or what they might not pay in the future.

This is the first step you need to take if possible, and if you do have it (insurance) and talk to him, that will be your opportunity to have a good reason to quit.

I'm tobacco free because of that question.

Good luck. I smoked from ager 15 till age 40. 25 years. I'm 48 now and my wife and I both quit on New Years 2000. We quit cold turkey. The first few days were the hardest but after a week or so it was no problem. If I could do it anybody can. People smoking around me doesn't bother me at all. You will feel and smell much better!

I smoked from age 10 until over 60, chewed from age 40 until over 60.

I felt better chewing and smoking, food doesn't taste any better, but I got a big belly from snacking it and having a beer while on this computer.

I didn't have the belly with the chew.

The insurance and lip or lung cancer bugs me thinking about it, so I feel better mentaly not doing it, but the truth be known it really sucks not having the nicotine.

A man just can't do it, get rid of it.

Its like setting on the stool in the morning and getting rid of your body waste, same thing with the smokes and chew, its also waste, flush it.

Do you have children? If so, that's your #1 reason to quit. I have never smoked but my parents did until I was in college. They did hypnosis and have been non-smokers for almost 20 years. My mother-in-law quit when she became a grandmother and we said we didn't want the kids around the second-hand smoke.
Sorry to sound like I'm on a soapbox but your family will thank you for it. My dad is 70 now and I hate to think what is health would be like if he hadn't quite that many years ago.

I know 3 people that have been diagnosed with throat cancer in the last 2 years from smoking. One of them is still alive.

Need I say more? My wife smokes and I am on her hard about it these days. We used to both drink , drink too much. I am alcohol free for 5 years now. She is alcohol free for the last 2 to 3 years, shes tripped up once or twice on that but I count my blessings still the same.

When we applied for life insurance, mine was $100 per month hers $400 per month, the guy says - smokers die and we are in the business of betting on life.

I found the easiest way to quit was to be in a coma for 6 months!:D
Woke up and never had the want for a cigarette again. (2 packs a day habit by high school)
Although for some reason every once in a while I will catch a whiff of cigarette smoke and have a pang about like when you catch a whiff of the grill at the steak house as you drive by!:D

My father smoked about the same as you Kyle and in the early days it was camel non filters. He passed in 92 from cancer. I was only 17. A few years later my mom was in Reno for a bowling trip and had a heart attack from plake(sp?) build up in her heart. She has had several related incidents that usually required a trip in the ambulance. She has been smoking since she was 17 and is now 74. She is down to 1 or 2 cigarets a day but still can`t kick the habit, regardless of what the doctors have told her about her life expenctancy if she doesn`t quit. For her birthday I got her a kit from here, www.smoketip.com but she said she wanted to finish out her real ones first. I talked to a guy who actually used it and he loves it. It smokes like a real one and even lights up. You get the "fix" you need and it won`t kill you. The only one who has any control over your addiction is you. We can give you ideas till we`re all blue in the face but ultimatly the decision is up to you whether you can control it enough to quit. Just think about how much extra money you`ll have for the hot rods,lol.

i smoked for 34 years until I went to "why quit.com". I read the information in an hour and it convienced me to crush my remaining pack, sell the rest of my carton of to my drunk buddies when they were out for 8 bucks a pack, and I haven't had another puff since. I feel good too!

nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs that is Legal to buy !!!

it is also POISON ...... my gardener used to use it to kill ants !! until they outlawed the sale of it in liquid form :eek:

I don't smoke or chew.

However, my best friend smoked two packs a day for 11 years. He stopped cold turkey. He said the biggest thing for him was to have something in his mouth. So he went and bought a massive bag of cheap lollipops. That action of putting something in his mouth and taking it out for a few minutes gave him that "routine" he was use to. Then he switched to pretzels, then quit. So basically for him, the hardest part was not, not smoking...it was breaking that habit of waking up, smoking, eating and smoking, etc. etc.

Just giving you another idea that might help you. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Well, I will not pretend to know what you are going through as I have never, nor will I EVER smoke...... I just never could see the sense in spending all that money to destroy your health.....

All I know about the subject (from friends) is that once you quit, you CAN NEVER HAVE ANOTHER TOKE EVER AGAIN!!!! My father quit over 20 years ago after his SECOND heart attack, and claims to this day that he still craves it most every day....

Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs, but, it is also one of weakest in terms of how long it takes to get over withdrawls. Forty eight hours on average to get through withdrawl. The thing you're battling is the habit of doing it. You want to quit smoking, do some research on the anatomy of a habit, you'll learn how to break the habit. Won't help you get through the first 48 hours, but will help, repeat help you break the habit.

If you want to withdrawl from nicotine, does it make sense to wear a patch or chew nicotine gum?? The patch "mainlines" more nicotine into your system then you can smoke a day.

After 24 years of smoking, the thing that got me to quit was thinking about how I don't want my kids or grandkids to dread coming to see me in the hospital, dying of lung cancer and on oxygen, because I wasn't man enough, or smart enough to quit. I do not want to be remembered like that to the people I care about.

I smoked for about 20 years,started when I was 15.When I quit I was smoking about 2-3 packs a day.My wife told me she was pregnant and I remember my father smoking.He passed away from lung cancer.I got the patch and stopped.I have a cigar every now and then but no cigarettes.It is one of the hardest habits to kick but its easier after awhile.I remember beer,coffee,and after dinner being the hardest.I dont really think about it much anymore and wonder why I didnt quit earlier.I realize that eveyone has their own reason to quit and when that happens it gives you the strength needed to follow through.Its tough because its a physical and emotional addiction.You already know its BAD for you so getting into that does not make sense.If you tell everyone that you quit for good,then you will have the extra pressure not to fail at it.I wish the best of luck and just remember that you are not alone with this problem.:thumbsup:

There is nothing good about smoking.

I have listed some of the cons,
You ruin your health, it is expensive, you smell really nasty, (yes you STINK, you just don't know it, you're used to it) you ruin your house or cars by smoking inside of them. As mentioned above Insurance costs are going to be more expensive.



Here are the pros,....................there aren't any.


I was tired of smoking and I was tired of quitting and restarting.
The patch and gum helped, but just got fed up and Cold turkey is what got 'er done.
(5 years for me this fall).

Use the patch, nicotine gum, laser therapy, hypnosis, whatever it takes to get the habit gone. just be diligent in quitting and you will get there

One of my old friends says that every time the old bunch has a get-together, he has to go home, immediately wash all his clothes and take a shower because of the stink from our smoking.
He smoked for years too but quit several years ago.
