That is a spring with a higher rate than the spring that is already installed in the pump. You can install the spare spring, if you want more oil pressure, but I recommend that you install the pump as-is. Your pump should have had an instruction sheet that explains the extra spring and how to install it. You know, that piece of paper that really didn't look very interesting - and probably just some guy's opinion anyway (LOL).

M77 Melling std vol pump?

If so that the optionmal vette spring that gives the motor approx 6-10lbs more oil pressure with hot motor & oil which is very good to run ,so install it.

BTW,There should have been a slip of paper in the box explaining it was the optional hi psi vette spring.

Just for ref when i have used that same pump with and without that opt spring over the yrs in different (fresh with new bearings) bbc builds i have done hot oil psi at cruise /2200-2400 rpms is generaly (depeding on clearances & oil viscosity) 50lbs + - couple lbs & with the opt higer psi spring 58lbs + - couple lbs too.

Cold oil pressure with opt spring is approx 15lbs to as much as 20lbs higher then with the stock/std spring. That higher oil pressure cold mostly due the the fact the bottom end clearances are tighter with motor cold and also the oil isnt warmed up yet either.
