What pan would you use for a BB on a 71 chevelle? Would a 6 Qt pan work? How about a pan with a baffle. I would appreciate any suggestions. Here a couple of pic’s of some pans that I was thinking of.

Thanks Nelson

For a somewhat stock/mild performance build I would use the stock pan. On other engines, I like the Moroso kicked out 6qt pans (20401, 20403, etc). That is what I have on Old Blue and the Pro street.

The second pic you have there kind of looks like it might be the truck pan? If so it will not work on a Chevelle. The front edge of the lower pan section on the truck pan won't clear the crossmember. A side view of the pan would confirm my suspicions.

Some guys use the deep sump style pans but I personally don't like how far they hang down. Good Luck with your choice.

Thanks ACE841

Here is the side view of the first one. It is supposed to be a 6 Qt pan. The motor is a 454- 450 HP. I would like to stay with a stock pan. I do not have a side view pic of the second one. I will try to get one. The first one reminds me of a Vette pan.

Looks like a pan off of a 454 or 502 crate engine which are truck oil pans which won't fit the chevelle. They say you can get them to work but must put the hammer to them.At least thats what it looks like but Im not a 100% on that. BILL

yes that looks like the pan in my 99 Burb with the drain plug at the rear. It will NOT fit a Chevelle(with stock front crossmember). You can get a stock style pan off Ebay usually for a decent price. Or place a wanted ad here:

www.chevelles.com/classifieds

Or better yet become a member and use the member-to-member classifieds. :) A lot of great deals flow though there IMO. (I have gotten some).

This is a stock pan:

I don't think that second one will fit the chevelle either. Moroso does make a stock replacement pan though.

What size BBC? Estimated HP? How much stroke? The proper oil pan for a combination is critical, it's one of the the few non moving parts that determine an engines life expectancy.

Thanks guys,
The motor is a create LS6 motor with no mods 454 Ci-450 Hp.
Here is a pic of the second pan without paint. I think you are correct about it. Probably a truck pan.

Wow, the one new repop pan is sure not cheap.

I used a Moroso 20403 on my can and it didn't fit. Did anyone else have the same problem? It is to sqaure at the bottom of the sum and hits the crossmember.

Mike
What year of Chevelle? I have the 20403 in my 68 and also in my "70" (actually a 71 dressed out as a 70 ) It fit well in both cars. The 68 is a factory BB car and has energy suspension urethane motor mounts and the "70" is factory SB car with Moroso solid mounts.
