change the oil and filter, pour in 5 quarts, start the engine, warm it up, shut it off, wait a couple minutes, check the oil with the dipstick. what it shows is the correct level. if it's off more that 1/4 - 1/2 quart make a new mark.

I don't know any fool-proof measurement, too many combinations of sticks and tubes out there.

My 66 Chevelle parts book doesn't list the measurements for part number 3846562, either, but my 67 Passenger parts catalog does. The 64 Chevelle dipstick is the same part number as the 59 to 64 Passenger dipstick. The catalogs don't differentiate between 283 and 327. The listed length is 16 1/8 from base to FULL and 17 1/8 from base to ADD.

that depends on having the correct tube, good to check.
