I have an interesting question about oil control, I ran my 489 at the strip and it kept blowing the oil dipstick out of the tube and spraying fine oil on the underside of the roof and burning off the headers. A friend suggested I use a locar locking dipstick which I did and it solved that problem. With so much action from the oil in the oil pan would a catch can or s vacumn system be a benefit? I have no blowout out of the breather holes.

In my opinion Catch Cans are really needed for intercooled supercharged engines. The reason is the oil film collects on the intercooler which is nothing more then a reverse radiator and as the film collects it sludges up the fins and tubes which reduces flow and increases the air temperature into the cylinders. All bad things. A track car can benefit as well to keep that same film from fouling plugs under severe conditions. However the added oil over the valve can add lubrication which is not a bad thing either. I have always used used Catch cans on intercooled supercharged cars and they are definitely needed but never ran one for a normally asperated car. That is just my opinion and should be taken as such.

Stroker cranks often cause issues with oil control in big block chevy's. What oil pan do you currently have? A good pan with baffles and a windage screen could help keep the oil in the pan.

It also sounds like you have a lot of crankcase pressure. Obviously a vacuum pump would be ideal, though it can be costly and it takes up some room in the engine bay. Getting the correct breather and PCV valve combo should be looked at to reduce that pressure.

What type of breather/pcv setup do you have now?

Breather holes, doesn’t sound like you’re running a PCV? If not, you might end up with rear main, valve cover leaks. If you don’t have a PCV, look at the adjustable Wagner.

Sounds to me like you have to much oil flying around in your bottom end. I remember with my first 496 I built, the car ran hard until about 5000 rpm and then my oil pressure would fall about as fast as the speedo went up. Get a good pan with a good windage tray or you will be replacing bearings like I did. It was my first stroked big block that I built and with 5 rebuilds in two years I learned oil control is big.

I'm using a old school aluminum Morroso pan with a windage screen, scraper, wings and baffles #20402. I have breathers and pcv valves also but Im not sure they are working properly. I didn't watch the oil pressure guage at all at the track but it seems like alot of oil action is happening at wot.

Oil windage by itself won't just push the dipstick out.....that takes crankcase pressure to do.

Sounds like a ring issue to me, or lack of enough breather capacity.
Oil pan style won't change the crankcase pressure problem.
