Its time to share our new project. After finishing the restoration last summer on a '70 396 we decided we needed to do something with the left over parts & parts car. My neighbor and I got the idea to see if we could combine a 2000 Vette and a 1970 Chevelle. We have been working on the transformation for the last couple months so we thought it was time to share it with everyone. Feel free to ask any questions, and if you have some ideas please feel free to give them to us. Hopefully you all enjoy the pictures of out process so far.

This is basically what we started with:

Our original pictures of the corvette chassis got lost so these were borrowed from the Internet. Hopefully we can find them and I will post them.

Now the fun begins :)

Re: Official - '70 Che Vette Build Thread

Time for the FIRST test fit.

We have to do a little more cutting to get the body down alittle more on the frame but we ran out of time for today. Hopefully get some new pictures up in the next week.

Hope everyone enjoyed the pictures so far. More pictures with-in the week so keep an eye on the thread.

Calling it a Chevette is IMO a horrible name. Anyone that has a memory knows how well built a Chevette was. Unless youre sticking to that theme Id call it a Corvelle or something else altogether. Considering the GM did in fact just cross the LLs to make them Ts with their POS, its neither new or imaginative. The name evokes thoughts of Gremlin and Pinto. Nothing Id put to a car that had the best American sportscar suspension and drivetrain under its skin.

As far as the project goes, looks like your in for one helluva ride with the car. Wish you the best on your progress.

Im curious if you plan to get the Velle body down over the frame since its sitting high by 6+ inches. Any renderings or ideas of what should be the final outcome? Could be a really cool car done right.

Real time , spent alot of time waiting for the torque tube stretch . Chevette is the name , doubt if anybody will notice the trunk emblem change . In our opinion this is how GM should have made the Chevette !! BTW Corvelle has already been used by a 69 convetible.

We were thinking building a Chevette the way they were ment to be built :)

Looking forward to the 2nd drive, 1st drive was alot of fun with just the chassis haha

This is just the first fitting of the body, we still need to remove a couple items to get the body down further on the frame. Hopefully by the end of the week we will have the body sitting where we want it. Keep an eye on the tread for the outcome.

I spy something red and fast under a cover in the back ground! So is this build thread in real time or is the car already complete?
This is real time, the 1st fitting of the body went on tonight arould 5:00

neat project, I wish I was as ambitious as you two are. I likes project but as you know it is not simple and there will be many many hurdles to over come.

i like how you are doing it.. most people try to graft the Vette parts onto the frame of whatever car they are putting it into.. your way is just using the sheetmetal shell of the Chevelle over the Corvette running gear. you don't have to screw around getting any suspension or drivetrain angles right- you just gotta make it look good.

Looks like just about everything on that body will need to be replaced.
Wow.
HAHA, isnt that why they make body panels :) U are correct not alot is re-usable. Seems the more we cut the more rust we find. Hard to believe its posible to do a concours restoration on something in such bad condition. Trying to convince the neighbor that we should drive it a few time with the rotten panels hanging of it. I think its a kinda kewl look :) I am sure it would get peoples attention.

Biggest change was adding 7.5 inches to the wheel base. Adding 7.5 inches to a drive shaft has been done many times but adding 7.5 inches to a torque tube & shifter linkage makes things interesting.

why not just set the engine back 7.5" so you don't have to lengthen anything? or would there be clearance issues on the front crossmember?

The engine is already WAY behind the wheels. Another 7.5" of setback would put the driver in the back seat .
