I have been fighting a battle with clover and weeds in my yard. I have been searching the net to find a solution. I dropped about 150$ so far this year on the problem and its not working. Any miracle products out there? Every product I find says they kill weeds not the lawn, but no luck so far.:noway: With that being said does anyone take pride in the yard? I trying to be that guy in the neighborhood with the greenest yard but these weeds are getting the best of me. I like to see your yard.

I'm no turf expert, but I know it can get expensive. What type of grass is that? You need to get a few bags of weed & feed, specific to the variety of grass in your yard. I have centipede grass, and use centipede ONLY weed n feed.

I live on a working farm ,surrounded by Thistle or sometimes called sticky weed .This stuff makes clover and dandelions seem welcome .I take pride in keeping my yard as nice as I can but I cant keep up against the thistle .I dig it up at a rate of about 200 plants a time and when I mow the next time they seem to have multiplied .I have about 4 acres that I mow and the rest my brother-in-law runs cattle on but I cant afford to spray it. And of course he says he cant afford to spray the 36 acres of ours that he uses for free to help prevent the problem that he started by spreading chicken litter on our pasture. I hope you have better luck with yours than I do with mine.

I've used Ortho Weed b Gone in the past, the liquid you spray on. It took care of the dandelions and clover. First time I used it I didn't think it worked but after about a week the weeds and clover slowly shriveled up and disappeared.

That was a long time ago, don't know if it's still the same stuff. We have an acre and a half now. It's cheaper to let TruGreen take care of it than to try and buy all the stuff and do it myself.

I use Ortho Weed-B-Gone in a bottle that goes on the end of a hose. It will kill dandilions and clover although it does take a few days for the results. Use a starter fertilizer after the weeds die and that will help develop the root system of the grass that remains. Also, cut your grass on a high setting and your grass will remain thick and....no more weeds. Use the Spot Spray Weed-B-Gone if any weeds pop up through the season. Use 12-12-12 fertilizer anytime in the season that your lawn may need an extra boost. It will not burn your yard. By the way, I am no lawn expert but this method has always worked for me.

Talk to you local Agricultural Extension Agent. I think they will have a much better grip on it. Also If your soil in PH balanced you will have less of a chance of weeds. Have you soil tested. They will tell you what which way you need to go with your soil. PH up or PH down.

I know we can send soil samples to the state university and they will tell me what I need to fix any problems. Maybe you have a similar option?

My father went and got his "Master Gardener" license after he retired and had this yard looking like a golf course.

But yard work is my least favorite thing, just below "root canal" so most of his work has gone to seed. He can't do it and I'd have to be retired myself to keep up with everything. :)

First off Weed and Feed is almost useless as a weed killer unless used at exacting timing. For the hebicide to work the leaves of the plant have to be wet so it will stick and absorb. If it falls to the gound it becomes of no use.

Second as mentioned please ID your grass. Centipede and St. Augistine are more sensitive than bermuda.

Thistles need a resticted use herbicide to kill them. Here is what I do.....In my sprayer that I have on the mule I mix 3 oz. Grazon/ Gallon Water and some golf course dye. The dye lets me ID the ones I sprayed. Probably by now they have a large seed head and will be a waste of money. Need to be killed early.

Most common weed killers have a herbicide base called Trimec which is a combination of three products. It is pretty generic in every product. If you look at the ingredients and three are not listed you will probably miss something. If you have a straight bermuda yard you can get by with 2,4-D which is restricted but available to the public in Quart size.

Give me a little info as I have been doing this all my life. I carry a Private Applicator License now as the legal requirements of the Commercial license were not justified by me.

Clover isn't really that bad. It adds nitrogen to the soil so it should only have partial weed status.

I've almost given up on the 2,4,D and other selective weed killers. They are close to useless unless you repeatedly apply them. If I want a weed gone, I use one of those weed hound things to dig it out or carefully apply Roundup.

At least you have something green growing! I can't even get weeds to grow on my lawn. I WISH mine looked as good as yours.

John (Bunz-T) covered most of it. I like to apply the weed killer on dry weeds when you don't expect rain for at least a week. Mix a cup of dish soap with the weed killer and water in a gallon sprayer. The dish soap makes the stuff stick to the leaves.

Don't water the lawn or mow for a week to 10 days. You'll see the clover dry out and disappear. After the clover is gone fertilize and water normally.

I have St. Augustine and it fills in nicely with Bonus S.

This is the Kentucky Bluegrass in my back yard (that's the Chevelle house in the background). I go for prevention rather than reactive measures, so I use Scotts with a pre-emergent, $45 a bag that does 12,000 sf at Sams. I never get any weeds period. BUT, as mentioned above, use a spray of anything with 2-4-D herbicide like weed-b-gone to take care of growing weeds. Yep, the soap "sticker" trick works.
