Today i've stuck in deep snow... While trying to rock a car something bad has happened :(
There was a "CLUNK" from a rear end and after that there was rocking/heavy rolling sound from a rear end while the trannsmission is in "drive" or "rear".
One wheel(actually at least one - the car is still sitting in the snow ;) ) still can spin when i engage the trans and depress the brakes...
This noise is followed by a big vibration...
The car is 1979 Chevy Caprice, with mild 350SBC, th-350 and stock non-LSD rear end (2.73 ratio, with C-clips inside)...

What's happened with rear end and how to repair it ?
Thanx a lot :)

Could be many things. You might have broke a pinion (spider) gear or an axle gear. You might have welded a pinion gear to the cross shaft and broke the retaining bolt, which might be letting the shaft hit the head of the pinion gear. You might have broke a few teeth off of the ring gear or the pinion gear. You won't know until you look into it.

Then again, you might have just broke a u joint.

I have never seen anything like that before! Wow, no wonder it was making noise. Has this car been under water?
I don't know :) In 1985 this car was imorted in Russia... It has changed many owners since 1985. 2 years ago i've bought it - cracked block, rusted body, transmission(th-350 - still working like new) was in the trunk -;)
Now it has new engine, good body and interior and so on :) 2 years of almost living in a garage ;)

yep, it's blowed up ;) tonight i was performing some donuts and burnouts and during the last burnout there was a loud "BANG"... i've limped the car to the machine shop, dropped the diff.cover. spider gears are not a gears anymore, crossshaft is almost broken... ;)
tomorrow i'm going to install new locker diff with 3.7 gears... :)
