I know this topic has be Beating to Death, so I will ask again.

I built a Friend a BBC 496 engine that is using Comp Cams 854 - 16 BBC hyd roller lifters. This engine while running at idle is Very Noisy, lifter's ticking, clattering. I used a dual valve spring that has 170 to 175 lbs on the seat with 420 to 440 lbs open pressure. Did I use to heavy of a spring. I was hoping by now the springs would have soften up a little and the noise would get a little quieter. When I assembled the motor, I used some lifter preload of .025 and used 15 x 40 Shell Rottella oil. This motor is on its second oil change with less than 500 miles on it. Should I change to a heavier oil like 20 - 50, will this help ?

Thanks for looking, Sorry to ask again,

15 W40 is good. Not familiar with the part# but I will say this, If they are short duration lifters your pre-load is probably OK. If NOT, you need to pre-load the lifters to 3/4's of a turn. I have the Morels (4603), my pre-load was 1 full turn. Morels like 3/4 to 1 full turn.

I had horrible luck with a set of the 854-16's about a year ago. They would not stay pumped and caused valve float. Swapped them out for Morels.

If you find a fix let me know. Mine are crazy loud too. Nobody seems to have the answer yet to stop it. My buddy has a similar set up but his is quiet..go figure lol.

I had a set of 854´s I never used planned themin a project but changed it so sold them. The set I had was the closed Wheel type if yours has closed Wheels the are more like a oem lifter and think your spring pressure is a bit high for them.

I have Morel 4603 in my 489 and is running 175 seat 400+ open, they are loud cold but warm they are pretty quiet. My combo got a bit more quiet when I changed to Crower SS roller rockers from Crane Gold. I Think with a performance cam you have to live with some noise.

This is the style of lifter being used.
I'm going to check the seat pressure and try more preload. Another question, is this a reboxed Morel lifter, Howard's, etc. Give me a few Days to work on this, I will keep everyone posted.

Thanks for all the replies,

OK, so who is the Manufacture and what are its limits like r.p.m., min - max spring pressures, preload, etc. Anybody know.

Thanks Again,

Ron 92Camaro :beers:
Thats what you need to ask the company you bought them from. I can speak for Morel as I sell 100's of sets a year. I can't speak for anyone else.

I thought you said they where Comps #854 ??? Wouldn't it make sense to call Comp cams then??
I did say they came from Comp Cams. The cam and lifters were reused in the 496 build. They only had a few street miles on them and were reused as per the Customer. Anybody that has been around the engine building or retail parts end of it knows most cam companies "" Do Not Manufacture "" all their components listed in their catalogs ! I was asking if any of the Members here recognize this lifter. Maybe they would know who the manufacture was, maybe spec's, etc, of this style lifter that is "" Re boxed "" by CC.

For the record,, I did call CC back in 2011 and was told it was their own manufactured lifter. The Tech Person I spoke with, agreed with my choice of spring based on how the motor was going to be used.

Ron, Morel manufactures Morels' lifters and I believe they rebadge for Bullit in some applications, but what you have is pure evil. Older Pro Comps. Give the wheel a spin on a few and you will see what I mean by evil. The wheels tend to rock side to side and the bearings out the box feel rough. And that rough smashed rivet holding the wheel on?

I had a customer come in with a nice Comp roller and a set of those Pro Comps on a carry out build. Even though it might have been a 450 horse build, I refused to use them. Every one felt off just by feel.

I would bite the Bullit, so to speak, and have Chris hook you up on a set of Morels.

Hi Ron, we use a bunch of those 854's and haven't had a single issue with noise or performance. Not a single unhappy customer!

Those lifters in your photo don't appear to be Comp's 854 lifters. All the sets I have here have a different appearance, see the P.S. below!

I would not hesitate to use these. I have removed some other brands for a few customers who weren't happy with what ever brand they were.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Here's a couple shots of Comp's pieces, not sure if the part number is readable in the photo, but the part number is "etched" into the bodies in the pair on the right.

Morel makes them for Lunati as well I believe.

Those lifters sure look like Chinese knock -offs from E-Bay sold by Skip White.

Gary, it appears Comp has a couple "revisions" of the 854-16's floating around. The one's you show have been around for quite some time and seem to be quality with a decent reputation. The other revision has the body with the exposed wheel. I had a set of these and they were complete junk. They would not stay pumped up and bled down after sitting for for 30 minutes or more. They also left star patterns on all my valve tips indicating loss of control. Upon removing them, I was horrified to find all the sharp edges of the lifter body appeared to be deburred by a two year old. Not something you would expect from Comp that's for sure. I sent them back to Comp and received a new set with no explanation other than "we found some soft ones". I took them back to my local builder for credit and bought Isky's (Morels).
