I was in the same position as you, thinking I had purchased the right drive shaft for my T400 to M22W change out on my 71. The drive shaft was out of a 69 chevelle with 4 speed. After all the work was done, and time for the driveshaft, I found the shaft was to long buy a couple of inches....
Shortened the shaft and added new universals and slip joint and I was good to go.

went and got the right driveshaft this evening, unfortunately ran out of time before I could crawl under the car. So friday after work just have to change the starter, and since im under there and the header is loose. Im going to install my inline tube brake lines. then I hope its just the bell housing, tranny shifter then driveshaft. Going to order a NSS or is that a clutch safety switch. I thought about putting the t400 on craigslist but thought better of it for now. Figure once the car is actually driving and shifting. Then consider getting rid of the tranny. jim

If you dont mind my asking what did the total conversion cost you? Just ball park. I almost went this route before I bought the TH400 I have but couldnt make th numbers add up right and didnt want to spend 2k on somthing I wanted to do rather than fixing the things that NEEDED to be done, if you know what I mean.

it cost me $1300 for the conversion. BUT I cheated. I bought a 71 elcamino project truck without the motor, but with 621 bell housing, pedals, shifter, muncie, console. basically the whole ball of wax except for the driveshaft. Paid 1300 for the elcamino and 20 dollars for the driveshaft. plus 60 for the 454 flywheel.
I could have made the whole conversion basically for free if I would have parted the rest of the elcamino. I ended up with a spare 331 12 bolt posi, discs, SS hood, floor shift tilt, AC. BUt like any car nut would I just went and got it running too. jim

well, its almost 1am and I decided time to go to bed. tranny is in! starter required shorter bolts. exhaust is on. I just need to swap out the adapter ujoint for the rear. hook up the return springs. bleed the brakes. install the driveshaft. Buy a shift ball for the shifter. fill the tranny. Adjust the Ebrake and I think its done! NOw if the tranny shifts, I'll be a happy camper. Last thing, I need to order a neutral safety switch. jim

I am acutally going in the other direction. What I would like to find is somebody that has a 400 in a chevelle and wants to go with a manual and swap out all the parts. I never thought I would be posting such a statement (yuck).

Good luck on finishing up,

too bad your not close, I have the console, tranny driveshaft and all. But...
Took the wife out for a drive with it. She perfers the automatic. So the turbo 400 might end up back in the car after the fun factor wears off. jim
