I bought 2 new wiring harness's for my 70 El Camino from American Autowire, the forward lamp that is made to eliminate the old voltage regulator for an internal regulated alternator and a new engine harness for an HEI ignition.I hooked it up and it fits perfect. The problem I'm having is no power at the engine harness.I connected a wire from the battery to the junction box and I have lights but nothing from the engine harness no wiper or anything to HEI wire.I have the starter hooked up with the purple wire on the only small terminal that's on the solenoid.I have the ignition switch and the neutral safety hooked up.
Can some tell what I'm missing.
Thanks

Are you sure the dash harness in your car is a 1970 unit? The harnesses are a different from 70-2 and they are not interchangeable. They are circuited differently. The 71 is close, but is still different. The 72 is totally different. Let me know what you find and we'll be happy to help you trouble shoot it.

I'll be following this thread closely. Identical problems. ALL new American Autowire harnesses in my 70, no power at starter, lights work.
Please define no power at starter. Do you mean on the purple wire when you try and crank it? If so, the neutral safety switch my not be plugged up in the car? The power from the switch goes thru the switch and out to the bulkhead. See if there is power at the bulkhead assembly on the purple wire.

Hi Donny,thanks for your help.
The 2 I have are CH01304H engine harness and theCH01302PI light harness,I purchased them from Rock Auto.I checked the fuse box with a test light,I have power at every point except at the INST fuse and spade.I checked the purple wire at the bulkhead with the key in the start and run position and did not get anything,I also checked it at the starter with the same result.I have the neutral safety switch hooked up.Could I have it wrong. Also do I need the yellow wire hooked up on the starter.

Hey, franken. Kinda sharing this thread, but I don't want to intrude. Maybe we can help each other some, along with the others here. If I were you, I would first take the NSS out of the equation. Take a paper clip and jumper the NSS plug. Then see if you have power on purple at starter with someone cranking. Yellow wire should only be needed if you have old points style ignition.

Ok, on my car I just did what I told franken to do. I jumped the NSS plug and test light lights up on purple at starter. Starter dead? (brand new Powermaster) I don't even get anything with a screwdriver jumping solenoid to batt cable. Also rebuilt (by Steve Hackel) wiper motor has nothing. Edit: Just took off starter and took to Autozone- worked fine

That doesn't make sense? If the starter is good, you have 12v at the battery terminal on the starter and jumped to the other lug with a screwdriver the starter should spin. Have you checked for 12v at the starter on the battery connection?

Only other possibility is no ground. Starter should be grounded through the bolts to the engine. Engine ground? Does your negative battery cable have a good connection to the engine?

I agree, doesn't make sense. Was using a test light. Guess I'm going to have to learn to use multimeter I have. Mechanic buddy got it for me but it seems way to complicated and touchy. Don't know if 12 volts, I'll have to check. Battery neg cable to block but paint on block.

Just thinking. Do you have headlights and interior lights?

Check it at the ignition switch. It's a separate plug in the switch to feed the forward engine harness. May not be fully seted or a bad switch. Power enters the engine harness via the switch then through it to the NSS and back to the starter. If you have the TCS hooked up it will click when the key is turned to on.

BTW care to add your name in your profile. Always prefer a first name ;).

We'll keep watching to see if we can help.

Dino, what kind of starter? Purple wire needs to go to "S" terminal. You really have to confirm this. If you installed starter, then looked for terminal, you probably can't even see "S" terminal from below, I know I can't see mine. You won't need yellow wire with HEI.

Hi Dave

I have resolved all my issues except for the starter. The starter I have is the GM 10465143 gear reduction starter. It only has one small stud on the solenoid and I have the purple wire hooked to that but it does not get any juice when I turn the key.I haven't tried to jump the NSS plug or with a screwdriver jumping solenoid to battery cable.I guess I can try that tomorrow. How did you fix yours
