Hello after any thoughts on this engine I am looking at buying for my 71 SS,

454 Chev Big Block | Trade Me

My car has the original 402 which is getting a bit tired and i'd like to store. Had a quick talk to engine builder and he said he built it about 4 years ago for a customer who then needed the money and sold it before installing it. It has since been sitting in current sellers garage and he has decided to go the LS route. The builder said the build was over $16 thousand so is cheap. Any opinions out there?

It's pretty mild, which isn't a bad thing. It looks like he used quality parts, do you know what crank and pistons were used? How strong is the local market for an engine like that, would a cash offer entice him to lower his price or include the transmission or fuel injection?

Good luck with the negotiations.

Papakura Engine Specialists have a good reputaion so Im sure it was well built.
I went another route with mine. I managed to find a bare block and had a guy in Silverdale build mine up. Cost around $5k all up but I got lucky with a few parts.
I can give you his number if you like. He's well worth talking too.

Another option, For 9800.00 you can buy a brand new ( All Alum.) LS- 6.2 ( its 430/440 on 87 or Can be bumped with higher oct. fuel. Engine with the transmission and all the wiring from Chevrolet. This crate LS engine is built for PRE. 1973 G.M. Cars. ( It has no modern day emission equipment = Pre 73 install ONLY)
YEP, Thats a lot of money for a ( Brand New ) LS engine & Tranny. And again YEP, Thats a lot of engine. And YEP, It is quiet and sounds like the neighbors old four door Buick and it gives some real good , POWER & Milage.

I'm not sure if you noticed he lives in New Zealand. Exchange rates, shipping and tariffs play a big part in determining what is cost effective.
