I finally made an appointment to get new gears installed in my 65 12 bolt. I’ve been rolling around with 2004r and stock 2.73 gears for about 5 years now. Can’t wait to feel the 3.55’s jump away from a red light. It’s a cruiser only but the 2.73 gears really made the car feel “heavy”.

Right on. Make sure to post back if you get a warm fuzzy feeling from the swap or if you feel you should have stepped up to 3.73's.

What's your engine?

That will wake up your 327 and give you a usable overdrive as well.

327, camel hump heads with a mild Isky cam. It’s no race car but I really needed (wanted) a better gear to match up to my camshaft, Isky mega 264. I went back and fourth between 3.73 and 3.55. After reading tons of comments on this site, I leaned towards 3.55.

Since it's a cruiser you did well with the 3:55's. You'll notice a big difference with either choice, but the 3:55's will show their advantage on the highway.

I have a 3.31 and wish it was a 3.55 but then again I have a M21 with a 2.20 first gear. Not a great combo IMO but that is how it was built. I assume your tranny's first gear is close to 3.0 to 1 and with 3.73 might be too much for first. You don't want to shift to many times 0-60. My Shelby did 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and shifted at 62 to second. Shifting costs time.
