well still stuck between small and big! i have a good 400 laying around but might want turbo! any suggestions? also still have my 6.0 lq4 from my escalade.my machine shoppguy says i wouls be amazed at an afr headed 400 small block. he swears the thing will pull like crazy and be over 100lbs lighter than big block. i really want to do a stock with turbo lq4 engine. My car is 1969 chevelle. I have built turbo mustangs from junkyard stuff with good results. Also have raced turbo buicks in the past so turbo knowledge is up to date for me.

looks like simplicity is going to win this one. 496 with aluminum can be built by my 15 year old. cost would be cheaper also. the 400 route dont look bad.

i vote big block with a turbo there is just no substitute for big block torque throw in a turbo to boot and your smiling all day . :hurray:
very unstreetable i bet, well maybe not. 540 with aluminum heads sounds good also. i might do the 400 small until i get funds to do big block turbo. only downfall is limited space with big block and turbo.

When he is done with yours, can he do mine next?

Watch out Mike Lewis the 15 yo engine builders are coming :D Old school here, I like those cubic inches.

It could be the machine work/prep whatever, but my kid bro has a 74 Nova sitting in Tempe AZ with a "blown", blown 400. Paxton style. Lost a head gasket.

Somehow, I dont think I'd pressurize a 400. ARF heads and solid cam.... yeah we call those "RATKILLERS".

i love them all so much! but i'm going to vote for the 6.0, with recommendation of a turbo too.
check out the May of 07 issue of Car Craft. they put some GM L92 aluminum heads (for a grand) onto a 6.0 with a cam, and made 550 HP.... 1.5 HP per cubic inch.
with a turbo,i could see a streetable 750-800 HP ,easy!
