I currently have a large cable running from my battery(-) terminal directly to a bolt into the body of the alternator. I also have a smaller wire going to the fender (chassis). I friend of mine is saying that instead of the alternator, the large wire should go directly to the engine block. How do most of you have it wired? To the engine block? It is eventually making contact with the block, since the alternator body is attached to the block via a bracket. Is one way better than the other? I don't think I'm having any misfire issues, but I am having some issues with my aftermarket tach and my friend thinks this maybe part of the issue.

Thanks.

The negative from my battery goes directly to the block and the small braided ground strap goes from the engine to the frame.

The main negative cable only needs to supply ground to the starter motor and the ignition. So if it starts and runs good it's probably got a good connection. 70's had it bolted to the to alt bracket. Other years it was bolted to the block or head.

As far as the tach goes, try to keep the wire going to the tach away from other wires as much as possible. GM ran a separate wire through the firewall for the tach instead of running it in the engine harness.

Good place to start with the ground but check the post I just created this morning - I was having problems with my aftermarket tach - if all else fails, you might have the same problem I did. Good luck!
