On an automatic?? It's mounted on top of the steering column under the dash. Can't remember the wire colors off-hand. Maybe pink and green, or those were used on later years.
They rarely go out of adjustment. If the car is starting in PARK the switch is probably close.

My car will start when in drive. The back up lights do work. Is it probably a bad switch?

You could try unplugging the NSS connector and connecting an ohmeter across the switch terminals. With the e-brake set (for safety) try running throught the gears and see if the contacts are always closed.

According to my diagram, for backup lights you're looking for:

20B-P
20B-LG

I think this translates into a 20ga Black w/ Purple trace, and a 20ga Black w/ Light Green trace.

For NSS:
14PPL (14 ga. Purple) into switch from Ign. switch.
16PPL (16 ga. Purple) from switch to firewall connector.
16PPL from firewall connector to "S" terminal on solenoid.
