I just bought an upper alt. bracket for a 66 396. First off, it's a piece of junk, the bracket is so flimsy it just does not look good next to the other original brackets. It does'nt fit right either. In order to make this bracket fit I need to put a spacer between the the alt. & the adjusting arm, this does not seem correct, also the adjusting slot ends up behind the threaded tab on top of the alt! (so I have to put the bolt in from the back) should'nt be in front???? I also had to grind the bracket in various placs to make it fit. If anyone out there has an original upper alt. bracket for a 66 396 they want to get rid of, let me know. I would also be interested in a complete ORIGINAL set of long pump alt. & power steering brackets & pulleys for 69-70 big block. I know all the resto mags have these, but I will not order them after seeing the quality of this bracket!
Thanks!

Hey ETD,

I asked this question before but nobody replied(for a 68 which is the same) about whether or not the bracket goes in front of the alt or behind. I have seen pictures both ways and my belief is that they do in fact let the alternator mount in the front of the bracket(bolt from behind). As for the quality of your bracket I had the same issue. I ended up ordering a generic arm (I wanted chrome) to get my setup lined up. I have couple of pics from different restore cars that might help I will try to get them loaded for you.

On my 66 I ordered the upper bracket from OPG and they sent me a small-block one by mistake, so I ended up using a generic curved arm. Works great, simple, weighs less. If your into originality then swipe a bracket off a big-block truck or something and paint it, cause I think they are all the same.

Are you using the correct bolt on the water pump? It bolts down the water pump, then has a threaded stud to mount the bracket to. I'm just thinking that if you have the bracket bolted directly to the pump, it may cause problems like that.

Yes. I have the bracket bolted right to the pump. If I use the stud, the top hole is about 1/4" away from where it mounts on the intake? I would need a little spacer behind the bracket, and also there is a little tab that comes off the bracket which I believe is used when you clamp the top rad. hose, this tab would move out 1/4" and interefere with the hose?

ETD,
Hopefully this is not insulting, but have you tried a good GM dealer for the bracket? When doing my 71 SS from 350 to 454, I tried to locate the brackets to use my existing SB power steering pump but couldn't find any till I checked the dealer. Duh! They were discontinued, but still available through their warehouse and not expensive at all. For the Alt., I bought new chrome from Summit, looks and fits good; pretty good quality so far.
