Is there a way to cut down my guides at home? I have the appropriate cutter for my seals, and have my installed height figured out I just don't have sufficient retainer to seal clearance.

There on my 781 heads,

Thaks in advance
I've searched and can't find an answer.

years back i bought my own "PerfectCircle" valve guide cutter tool. it was a VST1611 i believe. i tried to do a search for the tool but came up with zilch. i'm sure it's still available.

i bet you can get the job done cheaper at a shop though. for the cost of cutting down the guides it probably wouldn't pay for the cost of the tool ;)

Thanks guys my cutter is a Howards, HRS-92045
It puts a champher on the top of the guide but won't shorten it, bummer.

I thought the comp web site said theres cuts the guide down too but I don't know. This is getting expensive. But at least I'm learning something.

With +.050 locks I get .056 retainer to seal clearance on the intakes.
The +.050 locks also put me right on the money as far as installed height.

Can I run without a seal on the exhausts?
I'm using all comp cams hardware.

Jess,
You are not pushing hard enough...... that is the same cutter that I use and is the same one sold by almost everyone. It most certainly will cut the guide down to any hgt you want. Dont turn it too fast, probably 600 rpm or so.

Thanks for the info Mr. Bill.

It seems that a lot of guys don't run seals on the exhaust valves is this alright? It seems to have bronze guides on the exhausts already.

it might smoke and use oil with no exhaust guide seals. we used to run race car engines with no exhaust seals, but total mileage is very low and nobody cares if it puffs a little smoke at startup.

lean on that tool a little, it'll cut the guide down as noted by Bill.
