I would touch the magnetic pick-up wires together on the box then release them and see how strong the spark looks like at the coil.

Dave

SO if i understand correctly take a paper clip and jump the connector that goes to dist and watch the coil wire jump to the block ....... howe strong is stron g enough

Which distributor ?? If it is an MSD, the forst thing I would do would be to replace the cap and rotor, even if the present ones look like new. I have had a couple of customers lately fix similar problems by replacing the caps and rotors on MSD distributors, even though they could see nothing wrong with the old ones.

If you're using the stock ignition wiring, it probably still has the ballast resistor wire in the circuit.

Try running a LARGE (#12 at least, preferably #10) wire from the IGN point in the fusebox, straight to the ignition system. Use those big thick heavy "beast" connectors, not the regular little weenie ones.

Hey Bill ..........small body GM dist with Dave Ray magnetic trigger igniton module( actuall a ford unit I think ) ...with MSD cap .......and that cap has never fit tight since day one ..............will do Thanks

What would cause the coil to leak ..I realize an old coil coud do that but never had an aftermarket one do that

Make sure with the key off you have less than 0.4ohms resistance from the negative side of the system to the head where the spark plugs groung out {in the threads}, on mine its less but i have a main ground wire going to each head to insure the head doesnt get isolated from ground with thread sealant on the head bolts and head gasket

Also, make sure all grounds have less than .4ohms resistance from negative {at battery is fine} to the ground wire for box

Make sure you dont have any voltage drop of more than .4 also
