Was told it was in a 70 chevelle and that it was a m22 but the case numbers etc does not reflect that, anyway to tell if it’s a m20 21 or 22 without opening main case? Shifter is hurst comp plus us pat 3.216.274?

That main case was used in '63-'65 M20 and M21 transmissions and has the 7/8" countershaft vs. the 1" countershaft of the later transmissions. No grooves on the input shaft denote M20, Transmission is almost 60 years old, though, so hard telling what it is inside. Definitely not a M22, though.

Yep, buenymayor is right. An M22 would have finer splines on the input shaft, and an M21 would have a groove around the input shaft. M23 was not a factory Muncie transmission. It was made by Autogear, I believe.

Only 1970 and later M22's had 26-spline inputs fwiw.

Thanks Dave. I didn't know that.

With that said can this muncie be used in a 1968 chevelle console Car with no modifications or changing anything? Linkage and shifter seems correct

You will need this shifter to install your Muncie into any 1968-1972 Chevelle with or without a console.

If you cannot find one, I have them in stock and available.

The transmission will work just fine, as long as you have the right shifter, as Jody said. You'll have to check your driveshaft length and yoke. If you're going from a TH400, the yoke should fit. Not sure about TH350 output shaft.
Who ever told you it was from a 70 Chevelle and is an M22 is wrong on both counts so don't believe a word they are telling you. How much are paying for it? An old Muncie with no history is not worth much these days so keep that in mind when buying one. Also the speedo is on the wrong side for a Chevelle.

From the speedo being on the wrong side, how will that affect the installation? Can it still be used with no modification besides a new shifter?

A TH400 yoke will not fit the trans he is showing in the pictures.

What is the guy asking for it?
I already bought for 900$, shifter linkage all included 😩. I could recoup some funds by selling the shifter and purchasing new one, I have to purchase new yoke I have original 4spd driveshaft. It is an original 4spd car
There is the problem. You were told you were buying an M22 and that is not what you have. Can you get your money back? You basically bought a core transmission for $900 is WAY too much. Take it back to where you got it. You should have asked if it was an M22 Before you bought it.
They’re all M22s at the swap meets..

That said it will work for you. Pull the side cover and post a pic. Also any stamps.

I believe the powerglide, turbo 350, and 69 and earlier 4 speeds used the same transmission yoke.
As said, your driveshaft will be fine.
The shifter has the wrong riser for a '68 up. That is the piece that the handle attaches to. It can be changed to the offset riser and not replace the whole shifter body. If that's not something you want to do, then a correct body will be needed. The rods and arms, should still fit and work. You'll need the correct handle for your application also.
BUT, before you buy anything, remove the side cover and carefully inspect the internals. If it has been trashed, it may not be worth rebuilding.
