Hi, I have a used 168 tooth flexplate, both bolt patterns. Only paid $10, looks good. I’am a little hesitant to use it. Engine, starter and tranny just rebuilt. I don’t want to put together and install and then discover a problem.

should I just buy a new flexplate? And is there a good one ou t there that has been used without any problems? Thanks

BillK will probably say to get a Pioneer. What is wrong with your existing one?
Actually he would say "Use the one you have if there is nothing wrong with it" :) :) There really is not much to go wrong with a flexplate unless the teeth are chewed up.

I think it comes down to peace of mind. So you’ll have to decide if you’ll be ok driving that old one without stressing about it.
If you do get a new one, summit brand are rebranded pioneers with a smaller price tag. Good luck.

Check the run out on your old one or (what I did) buy a Pioneer or Summit brand SFI rated for racing, SFI isn't really needed for a street car but it's what I bought just for piece of mind

unless it was used on a 400 engine (Externally balance) you said it looks good ....I'd run it

I always buy the SFI flexplates from the guys that have the expired dates on them, still good for me to use down to 10.0 without a problem and $25 is cheaper than what they want new for them. Nothing wrong with them either.

Mine never came out of the car. If the tech inspector wanted to climb under there to check it more power to him.

Guess the big thing is make sure it's either a neutral balance or has a metal balance welded to it, isn't a 396 neutral balance ?

Look at what you have closely just to make sure that it isn't cracked and that the teeth aren't chewed up. I'd also take a look at the bolt holes, although I think it would be a rare incident to find them worn or out of round. IDK if they can warp although my guess is that something like that isn't very likely either. I have heard of them cracking before though. Usually a crack would begin at the bolt holes AFAIK.

Nothing wrong that I can tell. Just worried about putting in something and then having to replace it after engine and tranny are in the car.
