I had an OEM bumper rechromed about a year ago and noticed a scratch about 1 month after I put it on, now I cleaned it again and it's got scratches all over it. One goes thru the chrome.

That's the last time I use a California based chrome shop. You'd think for $500 you'd get a bumper done right. I guess they just can't use the same stuff they used to. I have a bumper on another car that was rechromed in the 80's and IT looks much better than the new one.

Both were covered with a tarp. Never thought a chrome bumper would be that soft.

This is just sad .

I have bought several repop bumpers and have been very pleased with the quality and fitment. I hear many stories of big dollar rechromes that look like crap. Repop bumpers are under 200 bucks shipping and all.

Yeah, the one I got from Bumper Boys a couple years ago at Carlisle was complete junk. Was twisted up and wouldn't even fit the car (front bumper). Put on a Goodmark repro, and it worked great.

sorry you had a bad experience with your rechromers, but if you find a place that does good quality work and guarantees it,then you will be very, very happy with the results. i went down this road and i can safely say that those repro bumpers are absolute garbage. they do not even begin to compare to a well done, show quality, triple chrome finish. i was fortunate enough to be able to do comparisons and once you have seen show quality, triple chrome bumpers on a car,you will never even think of using the repros.

bring your concerns to the attention of the place you had your chrome done and insist that they redo them. a good quality job from keystone rechromers on my 70 chevelle bumpers cost me around $375.00 per bumper, and there's a reason for that price. if you ever get to compare the repros to the show quality chrome, you'll see what i mean. repro bumpers have a place and are fine for low dollar, budget restos, but i think if you put repro bumpers on a car that is valued at 20,000.00 or more, you might as well have your car painted with dutchboy on a roller too.

regards, dave

Most of the chrome shops in Calif. have been shut down years ago. The new evironmental laws prohibit the use of the old style chemicals used in plating and stripping. All my stuff is going to tri city in Tenn.

So for a guy that has no bumpers, how about i get 2 repros and have em redipped at tri city?
They won't do repro bumpers. Call them up and see if they have any done. They are always buying up cores to do and have ready to go. The most you'll have to do is pay the core charge.

You might try to find 2 good GM bumpers and have them rechromed. They will fit better than the repo's.
I located a set of original bumpers for my 67 in AZ that are straight but need chrome, $800 plus shipping. Add $1500 plus for the triple chrome dual overhead treatment, it adds up to more than I paid for the 67 when I bought it.

Can you say fiberglass and chrome paint????

Sorry to hear your chrome didn't turn out the way you wanted as I just went through something similar. I had my bumpers and all the emblems, door handles, and various other parts re-chromed being the aftermarket stuff is just crap. Overall, I think the bumpers came out ok and there's a warranty against the finish. The emblems and many of the other parts however were not to my liking and ultimately, I will not be going back. Eventually, I'm going to have some of this stuff re-done because I have OCD and focus on imperfections way too much. The way I look at it - you roll the dice and you get what you get. I didn't have anyone who said anything bad about the place, they're always at Goodguys and I've seen their work, and the only positive recommendation was from Sherms there in Sac. I learned that the place I went is not one I would recommend and in the future so I’ll steer people away and go with another.

I don't necessarily feel ripped off at this point, but I’m close. I overpaid for many of the items thinking that I would get better results as the owner promised, but it didn’t happen. I know pot metal is hard to get perfect, but I also know that if there is proper preparation, you can get pretty good results as I’ve seen them with show cars. I know that Sherms up in Sac will do the best job that you can get around here, but you will pay for it. If I had an extra 3k and this was a ‘show’ car, I would have gone with them without question. I’m going to be putting a lot of miles on this car and I think I’m going to be better off at this point not worrying about getting a rock scratch on my 1k front bumper. I went to a place in Hayward – did you use someone in Sacramento?

Goodmark is now selling bumpers finished by North Star. The cores are imported from Taiwan and then North Star puts the finish on them. They also offer a lifetime guarantee against rust. Just make sure you get the new ones, the part number has an "A" after it, and the description says "USA Chrome". We've sold 20 in the past 3 months and no complaints.

If your going to buy bumpers and get them rechromed there are always used bumpers on ebay for far less then $800.

It's still early!! Rechrome original bumpers with TRI CITY PLATING in Tenn. That's it, your done! Hands down the only way to go if your looking for a show quality bumper! Enough Said....... They even get dents out and straighten if needed. My rear bumper had several dents in it and slightly twisted. Looks great and fits perfectly. For $315 per bumper, it's worth it IMHO.

It was AAA plating on Rene, off 80 and winters near the base. They ran ads on local cruizin news show and seemed to do a good job at first. Thinking about it just makes me sick. I really wish I had the equipment to do something like this myself.
