I have a 72 Chevelle Malibu and took the starter off. When I put it back in I think I might have lost some of the shims underneath the bolts. How many shims are there under the bolts. It makes a nasty screeching sound right now the way it is. Is there a different way to make that sound go away?

All the shims do is align the teeth of the two gears. This prevents damage to the gears. If it's a high pitch squeeling sound it may not be the gears hitting each other. It may be the starter motor itself making noise.

The sound seems to come after the starter should just be disengaging from the flywheel. Is it a possiblility that it isn't disengaging all the way? The starter is relatively new so I don't think it is bad. But that might be a possiblility to
