This past Sunday I was driving my 1970 chevelle malibu and, according to my mechanic, I lost oil pressure and my engine is toast. I really don't know what to do in this situation. I have another car (a rough 1969 ford galaxie) that I am driving right now.

Here are my options as a graduate student with no job.
1. Get a new engine. (2500 estimate from my mechanic)
2. Buy a used engine and keep the car.
3. Buy a used engine, sell the car, and put the money into the galaxie.

What should I do as a 22 year old graduate student with no job. Anyone have any opinions on how I should handle this? Anyone willing to help with a cheap running small block (Old engine was a mild 350)?

Thanks guys and I look forward to hearing your opinions on the subject.

I think you should be able to find a mild 350 that is still in a car, hear it run, look it over, make sure it doesnt smoke, and then install it in your car for no more than $500. Check out craigs list in your area.

Or sell the galaxie and buy a cheapo geo metro.

i agree you should be able to find a good used engine maybe even out of a wrecked car, check local scrap yards and even towing co's. any body shops around you may be able to find a wrecked car and buy the engine from the insurance co. craigs list is also a good idea, you will want to see it run.. before purchasing.
