My 64 ground up

I have been surfing this site for a while and taking a few notes for this build. Being a amature I'll probably be asking alot of questions down during the build. although being a amature I'm not new to this sort of project, I recently redid a 71 Blazer project that turned out pretty good for a first project. It was a learning tool that was very helpful as far as welding, paint and body. I'm hoping that this project will be several steps better. I bought this 64 a couple of years ago knowing that it would be alot of work. First lesson is buy a better car to start with, but this is what I have so I'll press on. The first big suprise was the trunk pan, po had taken a truck bed floor and formed it to fit into the trunk, welded a sing post to the frame and lag screwed it to the post, couldn't believe it! Will try to post pic of that. With that being said can the rest of the floor pan be removed leaving the body mount areas and crossmembers in place with any other support? Body is still sitting on frame with old mounts. I do plan on replacing body mounts before floor pan.

Hey-thats my kind of repair! I just did some of that half @$$ floor repair to my 66!

And mine already has the last owners patches rusted through!

And yes, real repairs are coming up. Super Chevy this month has a really great, detailed article on a 67. The info on the seqence/relative fit up of the panels was excellent. I'm kinda checking into this stuff now.

Just like to remember how it was when I started out, and not lose my touch!

Thought I should update this post as its been a while. Sinse last post trunk, drop offs, floor pan and braces, have been removed. The inner rocker at all brace locations was rusted and I thought at the time it would be ok to repair, well as luck would have it I went to a swap meet and came in contact with a AMD dealer that lived 25 mi. away. Long story short I ordered a complete floor pan and braces from him with no shipping charges $662.00 in my truck, after getting it home I noticed that it was different. Looking a littler closer it had the inner rocker already attached. With that I decided to rip out the inners that I had repaired, very glad I did. The inners did look ok but up front and behind them was really bad as the pics will show. The first is the pass side and second is the drivers. Now for my questions, I'm pretty sure that the access hole by the cage nut was cut by someone, can they be bought some where? and what size are they?

Hey Mike,

Could you give me the information for the AMD dealer you are refering to? I'm looking to buy the last couple of parts to finish the metal work on my 66 & would LOVE to avoid shipping.

Got a little done on the 64 this weekend, it all started when I recieved my new full floor pan with braces and inner rockers. After removing the original inner rockers there was a lot of areas that needed repaired, mainly cagenuts and kick panels. Heres a couple of pics of what was first

Looking at that patch you did you shouldn't have any problems getting the rest done. Good job keep it up. You have any pic's of the rest of the car?

Sweeping up alot of rust and discarded sheet metal. Kick panels are near done then on to floor pan, trunk pan, wheel houses, etc, etc.

A little progress this weekend on the kick panels, both were pretty rotted, in about the same condition. The outter panel looked to be 16 ga and the inner looked to be 18 ga, not sure why it was done that way. Had to make and replace the cage nuts on both sides and close up a access hole that the po had cut to free up the bolt. I was able to fab up new inners and replace but the outters had some weired bends and profiles that would hard to duplicate so I reused them and added the bottom. Seemed like alot of work just to cover them up with the plastic interior panel when all done. I just posted the pics on the drivers side as they both were pretty much the same. Also had to do a small repair at the end of the rocker on the drivers side. This is all in prep for the new floor pan. If any one has any tips at this point please chime in, as this is all new to me.

Where were you able to find the parts like the kick panels?

As you probably know these have a inner and outer, with the outer being a heavier ga. metal, I was able to save those. The inner I had to make with the use of a friends bead roller. The good part is that it will covered up with the interior panel.

Noticed I haven't updated this in a while, so over the last few months with a new floor pan, inner wheel houses and trunk pan. The floor was installed with new inner rockers, trunk is in temp with zip screws, wheel house is patched on bottom after flange was repaired, this is the pass side, drivers side has lot more rot, waiting on both outters at this point.

This needs a little updating, I decided to remove the speaker grill on the dash and smooth the firewall. Had to patch both windshield post on the interior side. Both pass and drivers side inner fenders are patched or replaced zip screwed together, drop offs in place, both quarters in place, still trying to get the right fit. Both tail light buckets repaired and clamped in place. Also I blasted the entire inner structure and shot two coats of SPI epoxy primer.

I check this site usually every night but dont update my build, more interested with all the other builds. I've check yours out as well, looking good, my plan is to do a 5.3 or 6.0, 4l60, a long way off at this point.

A little more has taken place, both quarters have been removed and installed at least a dozen times. It seemed like everthing was sitting too far to the drivers side but set all back on with the best fit as far as gaps and fitment, and just didnt look right then decided to put on the rear bumper to check clearance between outside ends of bumper on both sides. The bumper is tweaked a little but with brackets on it slid right on and looked pretty good over all.

Spent the last couple of weekends preparing to weld in both quarters, trunk filler, tail light panel. Went pretty well with close to two hundred spot welds. Of couse the tail light panel has to be welded solid which took a little more time. Spent most of the day today grinding, seems to be no end.
