ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Muncies (of the same year model), use exactly the SAME case, side cover, mid plate and tail housing. THE ONLY THING that seperates an M22 from an M20 or M21 is the INTERNAL gears. PERIOD. THERE IS NO EXTERNAL IDENTIFIER FOR AN M22!
Apporximately Oct 1968, Muncies began to get a letter designator (A, B, C) added to the end of the STAMPED date code to indicate M20, M21, M22 in that order.
OK, so while I'm on the subject of M22s, I might as well answer the next upcoming question--------------------because I know it is coming-------------------it always does in these discussions!

A FINE SPLINE INPUT SHAFT (26splines) AND/OR A BIG TAILSHAFT (32splines), DOES NOT, DOES NOT, DOES NOT distinguish a Muncie as being an M22!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The fine spline input/big tailshaft Muncies were the 71-74 versions and were NOT specific to the M22.
Yes, there is ONE exception. SOME, not all, 1970 M22s did get the fine spline input/big tail shaft. But which ones????? Well, that's been a point of discussion for many years. But generally speaking, it APPEARS that 1970 Corvettes, especially the early ones, as well as 1970 Vettes with lower power engines, may predominantly had M22s with the 10spline inputs and the "regular" size 27spline tail shafts. Whereas, 1970 cars such as Chevelles with the LS6 and M22, were all equiped with the fine spline input/big tail shaft M22s.

This CANNOT be regarded as gospel!!!!!!! Because too many years, too many broken Muncies, too many tranny swaps and too many owners have passed along, and it is almost impossible now to accurately say for sure which 1970 M22s were fine spline/coarse spline input, big/small tail shaft.

Oh ya, and one last thing. Up through 1970, ONLY the M22s got BOTH a fill and drain plug. No drain plug on the M20s and M21s until 1970. In 1970, ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL Muncies had both plugs.
Well guess what? Now you can't even identify an early Muncie as being an M22 because it has a drain plug! Why? Because Muncie rebuilders, such as me, as well as guys who have rebuilt their own Muncie, add a drain plug during rebuilding. So, that no longer is a valid method to identify an early M22.
Thus, this brings us to the final, one and only way to accurately identify an M22---------------------PULL OFF THE SIDE COVER AND LOOK AT THE ANGLE OF THE GEAR TEETH!

Thanks for the over abundance of info. I just needed those two simple questions answered so I could end a debate between a friend on which color was stock for a transmission and what material it was. You didnt have to go that in depth into it, but atleast learned something.

The A-B-C ratio designator started Oct. of 1968 for use in 1969 model year cars...
So early 1969 model year Muncie's did not get a ratio designator...
Hope this helps... Crash
Whoops, that's right, my fat finger mistake!!! I'll change it. Thanks for catching it. :D

And that's a true statement!!!
I've become that way because soooooooooooo many times over the years I've seen, read, or heard incorrect information about this, that, or something else, and it eventually becomes almost gospel for some people who don't know what is or what is not correct. So I try real hard to be sure that I know what's what before I say it.
Oh ya, and I have been known to screw up just the same as anyone else. There was only one person on this planet who got it right each time! ;)
