I’ve got a Muncie M20 that I’m looking to part with. I don’t know much about these transmissions and I’ve seen them for sale anywhere from $500-$2000. Any guesses on how much I should list it for? Thanks for the help

To be honest it is probably worth $400.00 to $600.00. Its a 50 year old transmission and its not installed in a car so there is no way to judge how it performs. Even a fairly fresh professionally rebuilt M20 isnt worth $2K.

Local CL has a guy with a rack full $650, I'm sure there's M-20's in the bunch, I just clicked his add 64 M-20 $650, others are well over $1,000, 70 M-20 sold for $750 not rebuilt, Orlando CL

Your buyer will probably be planning to rebuild it (who would be willing to run a 50 year old transmission as-is without going through it?). With that in mind, it would help to get good pictures of each of the 4 mounting ears to show that they aren't cracked. Remove the side cover and take a picture of the internal gears too. The condition of the mounting ears on the case and the condition of the gears inside are the two most important things that a buyer will want to know. As long as these two things check out, list it for $750 and see what happens.

That is an 010 case, which is 1966-67 only. The tail housing is 429, which is 63/early-65 ------------------------------ UNLESS it came out of a Pontiac (such as a GTO). Pont used the 429 tail housing up to 1970.
The side cover bolts have been removed, indicating someone has at the bare minimum, looked inside. What is inside?
Since 5-6spds with OD have become so common, the market for a Muncie is soft (I'm still a BIG Muncie lover), thus, the value for a Muncie is very low-----------------------ESPECIALLY for a core in unknown condition. Also, for ANY 66-67 Chevy, it is not correct because of the 429 tail housing (speedo fitting on left side), which could easily be changed to a 584 tail housing (speedo fitting on right side). If any gears or syncros are needed, I personally would not walk across the street to give $150
Sorry, I know that is what you wanted to hear-----------------------but you asked. Muncies were never painted black, and for someone that wants a nice looking Muncie, it may be a challenge to get all that black paint off.
Yep, I see a lot of labor there!

I sold my rebuilt M21 with 1" countershaft. $750. sold on the first day, pretty sure I priced it too low.
Was it professionally rebuilt with receipts to show so and relatively low miles since rebuild? If yes then you may have been a little low.
If not then you got a fair/good price.
Not picking on you but a rebuild without proof should be considered just a story.
Same thing as buying an engine or maybe just an engine block and asking if the block has been cleaned and crack checked.

The muncie I had in my car had stripped out holes leaked at the counter shaft and really needed to be rebuilt. I got $300 for it.

Proper rebuild runs around $1200 and I have receipts to prove it.
Since you can get New five speeds at only $2K a Muncie really only makes sense if you have a serious reason to run it.
They do take less space and are original to a lot of older cars.

a few years ago I listed a M20 for 400 and a M21 for 500 on craigslist. Add said just the trans (shifter was attached) I got 1 call for the m21, guy was interested in it at 500 only if I included the competetion plus shifter. I ended up keeping both trans and shifters for a future project. jim

I was going to add, of the used muncies I've installed, 70 chevelle m20, 71 nova m21, 66 chevelle m20 all worked like they should without any other work. jim

$1200 was what I was quoted to rebuild the muncie transmission I sold for $300. I bought a brand new Auto Gear M22W for $2k.

Well they are actually closer to $3K and if one has been running a Muncie then they will need a few other items such as clutch, yoke, driveshaft altered. However I agree it doesn’t make much sense to put $1K-$2K into a fifty year old Muncie when the 5/6 speeds can give you something the Muncie can’t, which is the overdrive.
