Hey, heres the story, the car was having an issue when shifting into 4th at high rpm, would sometimes grind if the clutch was completely to the floor. I was beating on the car alittle a few weeks ago and when i hit 4th it just made a clunk and kept grinding when trying to go into 4th and started leaking oil. So i take the tranny out. Turns out the input shaft and gear actually pushed the front bearing out of the case and stripped the threads out of the case where the 4 bolts hold front bearing retainer/input shaft plate on. so the input shaft was about 3/8" too far forward and the bearing was sticking out of the case, the gear was hitting the inside wall of the case slightly. Anyone know what caused this? Also the gear is in perfect shape but the locking teeth are slightly worn, does this mean i need a whole new input shaft, syncronizers and gear selector hub look to be in perfect shape. I already plan on a rebuild kit with new bearings, as the front bearing was shot. I will post pics as soon as i can.

Hi,

First of all the only reason things appear "pushed" out of the case is because several things happen with these old cases. The first is the threads on the old alloy cases will shear because they are old and often over torqued. Second is they can loosen easy because of the thread fits getting tweaked over the years. Most people do not use any threadlocker on these old cases which can be a benefit to help even out loads on irregular threads.

Your fix would be to properly heli-coil all 4 threads and use new bolts.
