I am looking for a manual trans for my 70SS that had an auto swapped in at some point in its life. This trans is located pretty close to me, and was wondering if it was worth $500? I have NO experience with transmissions, so if you guys do say it is worth it and I go look at it, what should I look for? If I DO go look at it and end up buying it and get a POS, how much would it cost to get it rebuilt?

I know there are a lot of "what if?" questions here, but I am just trying to get all bases covered in one post.:D

Any help is appreciated.

Just drove 350 miles to purchase a M20 w/ bellhousing / Clutch / Pressure Plate /Flywheel / and shifter for $350.00
I would expect to have any transmission purchased used with out knowing its history to have to be rebuilt. That being said I will install mine and try it first. Not a big deal to pull a Muncie out if needed.
To answer your question about being worth $500.00 yes I think its worth it. However you are a long way from the 4 speed conversion with just that tranny. Search E-Bay for muncies. There are a lot of them rebuilt in the price range of $1200.00 and up. If your patient you can find the right numbers for your Chevelle

there is a guy on this site, sorry i forgot his name, he rebuilds muncie's, i bought a 71, m21 off him, it was the smootest muncie i ever owned, i think it was $900. still sitting in my garage with a b.b. sitting next to it. i would sell it, but only with the engine as a package.

the point i guess i'm really trying to make, is find the guy on this site. i know $900 sounds steep, but you know it is done right and will work. mine just rocks. i think he's in la. somewhere...

Is your 70 an original 454? If so, they used a heavier duty 26 spline input and a big 32 spline output. The 69 Muncie will be fine for most use if originality isn't important. You can buy an all new Muncie for about $1700 with M22 gears, super case, and the big input and output. Keep that in mind when shopping for used.

Thanks for the input guys. My 70 was originally a 396 4-speed car, but the original trans was swapped for a TH350 with a shift kit at some point. I am doing some restoration on the car, but I am not necessarily looking for year correct items. I just want the car to be a very presentable driver that I can cruise with in the summer and enjoy.

DZ AUTO can tell you anything you need to know from inspections to rebuilding
I know one thing for sure for the price you pay rebuilding will double it.
The last one I did was a M-20 O10 box shifted great had my man do it Here in Tulsa
Seals gaskets brgs blocker rings still spent 400.00 including two forks reverse gear
I have two M-20s now which is my preference I have better than 800$ in each
