Hello fellow car nuts, I need help in figuring what transmission parts I need to complete my transmission rebuild. I have a case, # 3851325, has P0528, and 296680, the only numbers on the case. What tail-housing number, what main shafts, gears, and side cover does it require? I see these parts for next to nothing on E-bay, but dont know what I need. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated, thanks Brad

seems to me that if you are just starting with a case, might be easier to ebay off your pieces....and pick up a complete tranny....now, if i read that wrong,....search out muncie on the web....lots of info & parts, rebuild kits.....autogear.net ....has everything & real person advice....i believe your case is early years...'65-'67ish

The 325 main case was used in 64-65.
The P0528 translates to May 28 (either 64 or 65). The 296680 is the last 6 numbers of the original car that the tranny was installed in. Were there any other numbers/letters ahead ot that VIN number?
There were 2 different tail housings that could have been used behind that main case. For 64, the speedometer fitting was on the drivers side and for 65 the speedo fitting was on the passenger side, unless it was in a Pontiac such as a GTO, then the speedo fitting remained on the drivers side until about 70.
If you use the 63-64 style tail housing, then you can use a 63-64 tailshaft. BUT, if you use a 65-70 style tail housing, then you MUST use a 65-70 tailshaft. The difference between the 63-4 tailshaft and the 65-70 tail shaft is the position where the pressed-on speedo gear fits on the tailshaft.

In all reality if you only have a case and nothing else you would be better off finding a complete trans to rebuild.. IMO...

The 28 spline main shafts are interchangable between the early and late transmissions if you are using a pressed on speedo gear. You just need to locate it in the correct positition for the tail housing you are using... If you are using the clip on gear then you need the late tail housing...

If you do decide to build that 325 case make sure you use the later 1" wide hub and the later syncronizer rings. The early rings ( with-out the step) were known to break ....

You CANNOT use a 63-4 mainshaft with the tail housing that has the speedo fitting on the passenger side. The surface where the speedo gear is pressed onto the 63-4 main shaft will ONLY allow the gear to be positioned to match the hole in a tail housing with a driver side speedo hole.
Of course this ONLY applies if you want to have the speedometer function, otherwise, it doesn't matter. ;)

Are you sure about that? I have a '65 mainshaft that uses a press on gear, and the machined surface for the gear is pretty wide with no definite "stop". I think Keith may be correct.
ABSOLUTELY! I've been building Muncies for about 40yrs.
You CAN use a 65-70 mainshaft with ANY 63-70 tail housing. BUT, you CANNOT use a 63-64 mainshaft with the 65-70 tail housing. The 65-70 tail housing has the speedo hole on the right (passenger) side and that hole is further toward the rear than the hole in a 63-64 tail housing. An ORIGINAL 63-64 mainshaft has a SHORTER surface where the speedo gear is pressed on. As a result, that surface (on a 63-4 shaft) does not go back far enough for a speedo gear to fit and line up with the speedo hole in a 65-70 tail housing.
When I get home, if I don't forget, I'll take a picture of a 63-4 and a 65-70 shaft side by side so that you can see what I'm talking about.

Also, let me clarify one thing here. It isn't that a 63-4 shaft won't fit in a 65-70 tail housing, its just that if you use a 63-64 shaft with a 65-70 tail housing, you WILL NOT have provision for a speedo gear.

OK. I understand now. My main shaft is from a '65 trans, so that explains why it seems the gear will fit in either position. I have not actually seen a 63-64 mainshaft. :)
OK, here ya go. The upper shaft is from a 63-64 Muncie. Notice that the surface for the speedo gear is shorter than it is on the lower shaft.
Also, the lower shaft is from a 69 Muncie, notice that it has the small hole for a retaining clip to hold a plastic speedo gear. When I rebuild a Muncie with the plastic gear, I replace it with a pressed on steel gear.
And last, notice that in one of the splines for the reverse gear there is a hole. That hole (one on each side) is for an anti chatter spring. In time, the sliding back and forth of the reverse gear finally wears the spring down so thin that it eventually breaks and the pieces drop down into the tranny oil. NOT GOOD!!!!!!! I also toss these springs into file 13. You should do the same! They are NOT needed.
