Hey guys,
I am considering rebuilding my M21 tranny and am curious if there are any specialty tools that I will need to do this in my garage. I know snap ring pliers are one but I have been reading a few sites and some say you don't really need any special tools but then there are sites that mention using a hydraulic press to remove and replace certain parts...?

Is this a job I can do in my garage with basic tools or will I need special tools and maybe just take her to a tranny shop to have them rebuild it for me?

Advice is appreciated.

Cheers.

You need a press to get a couple of gears off the main shaft. Beyond that the usual hand tools and a snap ring pliers. The first one I did was done without a manual but I was very careful to lay things out carefully when I was doing the disassembly. If you go without a shop / overhaul manual make sure you lay the parts out carefully in the order they come apart.

You can purchase a DVD from 5 speeds.com. If you haven't done a rebuild before the DVD can comes in quite handy. The video shows you how to do this with common hand tools. However you will need a press to get certain gears off and there is a special wrench that comes in handy but the video shows you how to do the job without the wrench.
