Hi to all !! I had a welding shop tack a tail pipe hanger on my 66. When I went to leave the shop, engine just kept turning over wouldn't start. Finally got started but it backfired through the carb and the exhaust, wouldn't idle and kept stalling out. Eventually got the car to run enough to get home but hasn't been the same since. Seems like it was misfiring or timing was off, played around with it and problem seemed to go away. Thought it was fixed. Today, same as weld day, won't start easily and won't idle, backfiring.....again !! HELP GUYS....PLEEEEASE !!!

ZZ502 with MSD 6al

THANKS !!!!!

Not sure about MSD box ,but I run Crane HI 6 when the ignition is on there is a red light which tells you have power and while cranking it flashes to show you it is working hope this helps since you haven't got any replies yet.
It sounds like its fried, you always need to disconnect the battery when welding or doing any sort if work where there might be a chance of an ark or short,eg changing starter, wiring mods so on. Ask me how I learnt this :D

Send it out and have it checked. Its hard to say, but they recommend disconnecting it when welding for a reason. You can get away with it, if the person doing the welding knows what they are doing and keeps the ground at the weld site and it is a good clean ground. Otherwise, it looks for any ground in the car.

If its running its probably not fried. I had an electrical issue once with voltage regulator and the alternator was showing 18 volts to battery so unhooked battery to keep from frying it and the car quit running. Msd said alternator surged and burned a fusible link inside box.

I fried a digital 6 by removing the radiator and hitting the horn relay with the radiator, couple of sparks is all it took. Good luck.

Exactly !!! lol. That's what I said to the "boss". He said that it wouldn't make a difference anyways...that they've never had a problem without disconnecting the battery.
