Some years back I rented a VHS tape of a movie in which a co-worker played a small, but very conspicuous part. Later, I came across the same title but on DVD. His part was no longer in the DVD version. Is this normal to have small differences between the tape and disc versions of a movie?

I have both the VHS and DVD copy of "Dazed and Confused" and I swear there are minor differences here and there...for example it seems during the very opening shots there is not the "pan" of the scene or as "much time" spent on everything..(if that even makes sense) on the DVD, like some "details" were lost that can only be seen on the VHS.

Oh, don't give me that look, I have hobbies :D :D

:beers:

Lots of times, they will recut a movie when it hits DVD. Especially if it's older. Look at what Lucas did to Star Wars.
the first "special edition" releases of the original Star Wars trilogy came out on VHS- and in fact "The Phantom Menace" didn't come out on dvd until right around the time "Attack of the Clones" came out on dvd because George Lucas thought that THX should have beaten Dolby out for the rights to the sound scheme on the dvd format. he changed his tune when he realized how many movie sales he was losing because he didn't release it on dvd..

A lot of times too, DVDs are shown in wider screen format so you see the edges that were cut off during the formatting to square screen TV.
