would rear-mounted mufflers sound different than the usual mounting location? years ago in highschool(many years) i mounted a coupla turbo-style muffs about 2 feet from the collectors on my 68 imp with no tubing coming from the muffler outlet.man, talk about a rumble! the cops told me it sounded like a dump truck!

I moved my mufflers to the rear, under my trunk, it is really deep at idol and cruise. It gets pretty high pitch at WOT, but these are spintech and i have not heard them not at the rear before. Nobody runs the around here.

What kind of mufflers are you running now?

Not running any tubing past the muffler results in the exhaust bouncing off the road and car. This is what causes that deep rumble. Some people run dumps in front of the axle, pointed down at the road, to heighten this effect. I myself don't care for it. Mostly because 20 years of loud cars, loud music, loud bikes, wind noise, etc. has left me with a nice ringing in my right ear, and some hearing loss too. :( Each to his own, though. In 20 years or so, they'll understand. ;)

thanks guys, i don't have the 'velle running yet but i think i'll put the Dynomax Ultra-flows under the back seat with turn-downs, i'm afraid to mount them under the trunk floor since my fuel cell and lines will be in that area.

The farther back you can put your mufflers, the cooler the exhaust can become which shrinks it's volume some b/c of temperature differences.

All of which helps flow! And tailpipes out the back get the loud sound farther away from you so it becomes more "user friendly"..

But most cars nowadays flat don't have room for putting mufflers way back in the back like the bigger older cars.

I would say putting them close to the headers would slow the flow and cool the exhaust quicker (not good) making the exhaust from the mufs>> back cooler and slower causing it to be a deeper sound (longer sound waves)... but it will also cause more backpresure because the gas is moving slower after the muffler than before the muffler causing a backup of gas.

Putting the mufflers closer to the end of the exhaust (not at the tip though) would allow the highspeed / high temp gasses to flow smoother through the exhaust tubing then dump into the muffler then out the exhaust quicker, high speed gas, sound waves , higher pitch.

Sound good?

The closer the marks the higher the speed of the gas.
