I would like to use 66 valve covers on my recently built SB. To be used with air cleaner base for a closed system, open filter, and a holly 4160 carb. I was thinking of making an access hole in the side of the valve cover and attaching the tube from the air cleaner base to the valve cover with a hose. How do you think this will work? Would I need to make a baffle for the inside of the VC.

Whats the best way todo this?

It should work. If you go to the corvette forum they have numerous threads and pics of different methods of fabrication. There is even a modification of drilling a hole into the back of intake manifold behind the carb to attach PVC. Those corvette guys are creative about keeping the engine vintage in appearance.

Jim, I think those 327 valve covers are more restrictive than the 283 Chevrolet script valvecovers. Especially if you are using double roller rockers. I once tried to use the 327 covers with a 30-30 solid lifter camshaft and the steel rockers put dents in them where the sides curve in. I have seen both styles 66 valvecovers available with chrome.

That’s the look I’am trying to achieve. Undecided if that will allow for enough cool air or if the. open filter is better.
I was thinking I would have to use the extra thick gaskets or 3/8” VC spacers. Good tip on the two different styles Bruce, I think I can get a pair of both original styles to play with.

Jim, Muscle Factory sells those early L79 valve covers in chrome for $110 as an FYI.

How do you like the engine with the Trick Flow heads. Refresh my memory, what camshaft did you wind up going with?

Can’t remember for sure. A hyd roller from lunati. I haven’t driven that much to comment. Made good HP round 415 and good TQ around 410 to 395 from 3400rpm to 5500rpm. Transmission builder after a bit came up with something to hook up the TV cable to my old 4160 holly. Just a tranny leak to fix at the 12 v connection for the lock-up.

Those are impressive numbers! Is that a stock 350 block with flat tops? Which intake are you running? I'm basically building the same combo for my Nova, but with a manual trans. Going to install a TKX at some point.

Intake is the winters 490, 4160 holly list 3140 with single 3/8” feed, stock exhaust manifolds. 30 over flats top pistons, double roller rockers.
I'll be using the same intake, carb undecided. Again those numbers are very impressive. (y)
