I want to put a mini starter or higher cranking power starter on my 454 BB.
Looking at the Summit catalog there are at least a dozen. Which one to choose ?
They also say indicate 153 or 168 tooth flywheel. How do you determine ?
I have tube headers and will porbably need a starter that can be adjusted.
Thanks.
Thanks.

All 454's have a 168 tooth flywheel. A lot of the high torque starters have dual bolt patterns for either flywheel.

Get the basic Summit brand one. Look at the pics...you want the one with the multiple holes around where the bendix gear comes out so you can reposition it as needed to clear everything.

I've had one of them on my 540 for several years now...no issues.

Be sure to get one for either staggered or standard bolt pattern depending on what you need. I ordered a Powermaster unit for 168 tooth and it came with the standard pattern. I had to order a different XS torque starter that stated for staggered pattern. Both could clock but only one would work.
Hope this helps.

I just bought one from www.dbelectrical.com. I bought the $79 one for my SB, which I'm currently installing. They also have a $99 that can be clocked in any position.

I am also going to run 1/0 battery cables. Hopefully, this will cure my hot start problems.
i went through two of those from db electric. the bendix gear didn't retract back far enough ( by nature of the design),so every time i'd get on it hard, the flex plate would flex and the ring gear would hit the bendix gear ,and i'd hear grinding. they were some of the best people i have ever done buisness with. they exchanged the first one even though i told them i had already ran it. then they shipped me two extra shim packs for FREE!

i wound up getting a 96 or 97 and up vortec 454 starter from the junk yard for $55.00. it's a permenant magnet/gear reduction design, and best of all it was cheap, local, and AC DELCO.b
it bolted right in with the stock wiring (you will need the 2 bolts that go with it as they are slightly different in length). i never even had to shim it.
this has been one of the BEST parts i have put on my chevelle. and no more hot start issues!

I'm sorry to hear that the DB starter did not work out for you. Many here are running the DB, and that is why I purchased it. I did not receive any shims like I was supposed to. I guess I'll call them to see if they could send some to me.

ya,like i said. they were awesome to do business with. but their starter just wouldn't work for me. they tried their best to make it work ( tried uncommonly hard, for todays world of customer service).
maybe a SFI approved flex plate made of thicker material would have also worked, but that AC Delco factory unit is REALLY nice!

For my driver, I bought a Delco rebuilt mini starter. Gear reduction-Hi torque, quiet, and it spins the 454 well for the last two years. I am happy with it. Bob
