How much time do you need to drive on new plugs before you can get a decent read off of them?

Don't know what your doing but I check plugs at WOT and shut down quickly to get an accurate read.
1/4 mile works great for what I do.

Make a good WFO pass pulling hard through high gear , cut it clean , ( if you have to take plug wrench and a couple of plugs ) Don't idle/drive around and read plug(s)

I'm actually wanting to look at the different areas of the plug to try and determine idle, midrange, and WOT.

Shouldnt take long at all.

I try to work with a new plug, and they take color quick. For example...put a fresh plug in number one, and if Im checking idle.....there is plenty of color on the plug and you can also see the mark in the ground strap from timing in real short order. I probably dont let it idle for even a minute and Ill pull it and see that the new plug shows real well in that short amount of time.

Min. 200 miles on fresh plugs.

The plugs take their color set, or hue in the 200-400 mi. zone.


Tuning a street car (via plug reading) versus a bracket/track car is a whole different process for a entirely different world of ignition demands.
